Subject: bilge paint???

I'm nearly done with the stringer project(I will post pics soon) and I am looking in to paint. I am not sure what to get or how much. I want the same grey paint that the floor and bilge area was painted with. I looked for the paint at West Marine and holy crap, I don't think they could be more of a bunch of crooks unless they came and stole my boat. I don't know about you guys but I don't have $280 to spend on paint! Do you guys have a suggestion on where to get the paint and what type to get? I am pissed because West Marine is the only boat supply store in town that hasn't gone out of business. Everything they sell is twice as much as it should be. I would rather put my carpet down over bare fiberglass than pay those crooks $280 for one gallon of paint. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. F@#K West Marine

I used bilgekote from jamestown distributers as I was very ready to get the boat on the water when I got to this stage. It works pretty well. I'm also planning to sand and gel this winter. The gel isn't too expensive but is a little tougher to work with.

I'm surprised that you would even want to paint the floor and then cover it up with carpet - why? Just paint the bilge areas you can see. I won't tell anyone!! A quart of Bilgekote will be plenty.

One quart will easily give you two coats in the bilge.
I painted ours white also, it looks fantastic, but have found that it being white makes me want to clean it all the time. Gray is a good choice.

Joe,
One other method to use is if you have any resin left over, it can be pigmented. The pigment is pretty cheap!

Like Eric , Ive used the equipment enamel myself. Is there really anything "added" to bilge paint to make it 100 bucks a gallon vs 25 for the equipment enamel?

Thanks guys, I will try the equipment paint. I will probably just paint the visible areas and carpet the rest.

What about that epoxy paint for garage floors? They sell it at Lowes.
I'm not sure what it costs or if you can use it on fiberglass, but it may be worth checking out.

I'm also interested if this would work? What would the differences be?

I'd stick with the http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=119&familyName=Interlux+-+Bilgekote - Bilgekote at Jamestown $20 . It's designed for the application and known to work. Why take a chance for $20. Plus, it's high gloss!!

I wonder if that's what they did from the factory? The original "paint" in my bilge seems pretty thick for paint...

Anyone know?
