Hi,
I have a 78SN and the swim platform is held on by some very rusty looking bolts.
As I have the fuel tank out at the moment Id like to change those rusty bolts and I was wondering why they aren't stainless? were they grade 5 or 8?
I will be ok with some new stainless bolts right?

Good question. They definitely should be stainless.
I don't know about what grade, I would think 5 would work. Make sure you seal the thru-holes with 3M 5200 when you put the new bolts thru.

Stainless bolts aren't available in multiple tensile grades like carbon steel bolts are. Basically you will have a choice of ether 316 or 18-8 stainless. These are stainless alloys and really relate to the corrosion resistance. Both are rated at a min. tensile of 70,000 psi which is slightly better than a grade 2 carbon steel bolt. Go with the 18-8 from the hardware store and you'll be fine - you aren't building a pressure vessel here!!!

And, another testimonial on silicone!!! Boy, I hate the stuff. I'm going to have to add "I hate silicone" to my signature line!!
Joe,
What happened? Did your bracket mounting leak?

Eric,
I don't think your analogy with the paint is the greatest. The thickest normal paints dry film thickness is only about 4 mils (.004")!!!!
