I know this will start a real hot spot for many. The starter on my 72 skier is going. Why does it have to be marine grade? Starters in cars get wetter then the one in my boat. A normal starter is $50.00 a marine starter is $235. What's the big difference?

JB - The big difference is that the Marine starter has screens in it to block any electrical spark from igniting gas vapors, thus preventing an explosion. I am sure part of the increased price is for the lower volume of sales, part goes to the cost of certification, part probably goes to lawyers. Then there is the mantra 'Charge what the market will bear'

Don't forget that you will also need a RR starter. Less demand as well so the cost goes up. I'd take your starter to a "auto electric" shop and see about a rebuild. What's wrong with it?

The starter has a heavy draw or load sometimes. Yesterday it started a new problem of not engaging.
