Alright guys, this is a weird one. Only when the moons align right does this happen. I turn the key, and nothing happens. If I play with the push/pull knob to take it in and out of gear a couple of times, it fires right up. This has happened to me about 3 times over the two years that I have owned the boat. The battery is fine..I have never had to charge it at all. All the gauges work, but there is something finicky in the mechanism that takes it out of gear. I haven't yet taken it apart. My guess is that there are some contacts in there that prevent it from starting in one position, and they are dirty. Any thoughts?

Neutral-safety switch on the velvet drive, try starting there. Look at the position of the forward-neutral-reverse lever, where the shifter cable is attached to the velvet drive.

Just follow the shift cable (Open the hood) where the cable hooks to the tranny Your cable needs adjusted so that the linkage centers up in the nuetrel position easy fix.

As 66 and swamp said, cable has to be adjusted so that your transmission gear selector lever is centered in neutral. If it turns out that your switch is bad, SKIDIM has a new one it's Item Number : 1246. They show a photo that will help you identify it. If you are ever stranded, you can used a jumper wire to short across the two terminals of the switch and your boat will start.

The neutral switch can be picky. When I replaced my cable years ago, I didn't pay attention to the ajustment on either end of the cable, that threaded part. There's not alot of leadway in adjustment, if it's not close and you pull the throttle to neutral that little arm on the transmission doesn't click in neutral position, it disconnects the ignition. When mine was off a little bit, and if I went from foward to neutral and turned it off and then try to restart, nothing, but if I pulled it to reverse, then back to neutral it would crank. So the threaded adjustment on each end, one revolution can make a difference.

So is it supposed to prevent the engine from starting unless it is in neutral? Correct?

Funny thing with the neutral safety switch. I replaced the seals and plates on a boat at work. I ended up flipping the shifter asembly 180 degrees. For ten minutes I couldn't figure why the boat wouldn't start. Good thing it was easy to flip it back in the correct position, before anyone knew what I had done -- they would've gotten a good laugh at my expense.

Problem solved. Thanks guys. I figured out the range of motion required to trip the safety switch and then etched a line on the drive. I was then able to slightly adjust the cable so that if lined up in the middle of the marks whenever you adjusted the trottle from forward and then from reverse. At least now I know what it is, so if it should happen again, I know to rock the trottle back and forth a hair to get it centered up.
