I have a transmission or engine whine at high speeds, say 30 mph. My shaft seems to be properly aligned and packed properly. I do notice that my transmission fluid could be a little low. Do I have to worry about over-filling the transmission.
Thank you,
Joe Harris

how many hours on that tranny? I think those "early" PCM were whiners
There's a fix for it though, wait until Eric chimes in.

Mine does same thing. Moderate overfilling is not so bad - way better than having it low. I stay under 30 mph except for the thrill moments, so the gear whine is not a problem for me.

Tad,
If the noise is more of a "buzz/whine" then yes there is a fix. It involves installing a short length of hydraulic hose onto one of the fittings on the trans. It acts like a pulsation dampener. Somewhere there is a thread on it as well as a picture of the hose. I'll go looking for it but I'm sure someone will be along shortly with more details.

Band-aid Pete, not a fix. there are late style valves that cure the valve buzz problem, but not worth the money they want. they do install a rubber line parrallel into the charge circuit to dampen the buzz, he probably is experiencing straight cut "spur gear" whine from the reverse planetaries which will spin under no load in forward

Hey SNobsessed, I am originally from the Bloomfield, Iowa area. I grew up on a farm outside of Drakesville, until I joined the Navy in 1962 and never moved back. Thanks for your reply.

Tad, never went to the service myself but my dad was a Navy pilot & my brother served on the Oriskeny (sp?). Hope your boat is running well; the hydraulic buzz I believe is a lower speed phenomena. I was talking about the hi speed gear noise. The PO of my boat had Eric replace the reduction gear set & it is stll noisy, I think it is th nature of the beast.

its the regulator valve pulsating off of its seat and it creates a buzz noise, get alot of calls with the whine and basically it is the nature of the beast..some do it some dont, once in a while i will find the output gears hard facing removed and down into the soft part of the gear. its hard to alleviate the noise because of the straight cut spur gears and the speed they travel

I went through the same thing with my Excalibur with a 1:23 trans. I thought something was wrong with it at first because when in gear it whines. It is annoying but I sure know when the shaft is spinning. Apprently it is normal for these trans. Here is a video I found where I realized it is a typical noise. You will hear it around the 13-16 mark.
