What is the purpose of the carpet around the exhaust hose and mufflers? Heat or sound deadening? Does is make that much of a difference? My boat doesnt have them, but looking in the diaries I see a lot of boats with the carpet. I am wondering if I should do it.

Thanks
Jeff

correct craft did this to minimize vibration from the engine.or it could rub a hole in the exaust hose where it runs through the floor.

I have always removed the carpet and installed closed cell foam strips around the mufflers. This keeps the vibration down and does not collect bilge dirt & moisture like carpet does. I assumed Correct Craft used carpet because they had a lot of scrap carpet around and it was cheap & easy to install.

on one of my boats they used scraps of vinyl around the exaust hoses b-4 they sprayed the fiberglass over the foam.

I just removed mine after 16 years. I'm leaving the hose just sitting there as it is. The carpet was basically a giant lab experiment of mold and rotting organic material. I'll take the increased noise in trade for a moist, decomposing mess in my bilge!
