That's a pretty heavy coat of "paint"!......Billy will have a tough time with that one, not much call for the item in question in his neck of the woods.....or swamp as the case may be.

OK you northerners ....dont give it away, if it was a snowmobile crossing, wouldnt it be made of snow? ... Why is it concrete when the rest of the road is blacktop?
Come on all you southern "studs" , lets get the answer.

And Eric, Im kinda disappointed you dont know...

Charlie, guess my eyes arent as good as they used to be...

It could have been that parking for the lake was across the road and that was put there so barefooted people wouldn't burn their feet crossing on the hot pavement.

i really thought it had something to do with those cheese fed gals up there in the north, just like you see the no H/C on the freeway....i thought that stood for no heavy chicks, but then someone told me it meant no hazardous chemicals

It's a heavy duty pad so that heavy equipment can cross the road. Or maybe a duck crossing.

XFooter,
I think Petes idea was to have a southerner guess.... A lot of us sledders know exactly what it is... Thats why I had put the "stud" and "pick" hints in a couple of my earlier posts.

BTW, Pete, I thought it was concrete, what material is it made of?

Alan,

Billy has seen my sled when he was at our house a year or so ago. I told him he needs to come up in the winter... nothing like a 120mph pass when its zero degrees out! To date, Billy has declined all invitations....hmmmmm?

Us NE northerners don't have anything like that. Maybe because our roads are ruined by the end of the winter anyways.

Bruce,

Do you guys run picks? A few years ago MN outlawed them! Until they found out no one would go there to sled it the winter anymore. The last I knew, they are legal there again.

Steve, I'm not a sledder. If you mean spikes, yes I believe they allow them. 05210 would know. Whatever state Pete took that photo in is obviously getting too much stimulous money.

Eric, our leaves have been falling and colors changing since July, which was just about the time it started warming up.

Bill,
We are the same age so I admit that my eyes certainly aren't what they used to be but concrete doesn't have control joints every 6"!! I didn't email Billy directly because I know him better than you so I know he never checks his email!!

This was more of a quiz for the southern group but addressed to Billy because I know he's always amazed at some of the things we do up north and always gets a kick out of hearing about them.

Yes it is a snowmobile crossing. The white overlay is the same material used for the white lines on the road and the reason you can see it's layed down it stripes. I understand that the material contains quartz which is almost as hard as glass. Very resistant to both the carbide wear bars on skis and the carbide studs (Steve calls them "picks" as others do) some people run in their tracks. Without the coating, I've seen crossings worn through the top layer of asphalt in one season.

No I don't think Wisconsin got anymore fed funding than the rest of the states. It's just that they know it's cheaper to lay down the coating than to repair the asphalt every year.

Pete-

We seem to have gotten a little off track here...

I think the term "concrete" was used a little loosely... The material is immaterial... It is what it is... a snowmobile crossing... Let's leave it at that...

SO does everyone have their snowmobiles ready. I got an old John Deere Spitfire all rebuilt just as the temps started to hit the 40's in March. I have a really itchy thumb that is just achin to squeese that fun flipper on that little old 340... Its more fun to ride them my 06 Crossfire, ok probably not, but it is a blast.

Most guys in Maine who ride on snow call them "studs". People who ride on ice call them "picks". I have heard many Canadians refer to them as "nails". If I'm not mistaken, the Minnesota stud ban was initiated due to damage on their paved hiking/biking trails, which we do not have in Maine. The roads up north here are so bad that you will actually do more damage to your sled, than to the road you are crossing

Mike, you are correct. They are still banned on those types of trails, mostly around the twin cities, if memory serves me correctly.

BTW, for those who don't know, "studs" get a bad wrap as being destructive, and its just like everything else, its how you ride as opposed to whether you have them or not. Yes, they work great for traction and dramatically improve your hole shot, but most importantly they are indespensible in assisting in emergency stops.

Just got a new fuel tank for the old 377 Safari, now I have to find the time to install it. We rode it maybe once last year and I really heard about it from our daughter. She loves the thing, she's such a speed freak at 6. I think studs are still ok here in Maryland, they're permitted on road vehicles registered in our county. Of course our county is also the only one in the state where a snowmobile will actually see some regular use. I think a buddy of mine still has studs on one of his sleds.

Sorry for the absence from the site, too much going on here....Labor Day boat rush is over and time for my life to slow down...........
I would have guessed wrong on the "purpose" of the "landing strip for for inbound waterfowl" After their long winter retreat into the warm southern climate, they need assistance in landing their rather heavy frame.Damn Yankees think of everything.
Do these have landing lights also.....
