Does anyone know if the sending unit in an 88 sn 2001 can be removed and replaced without removing the tank ? Last year when I took the tank out to clean it I must have messed up the original that was working just fine prior. Currently my gauge only works when the tank if full but then jumps all over the place as soon as I burn some fuel off. Im guessing I need to replace it at the end of the season.

I hope this does not apply to my boat...now after the resto my fuel gauge its not reading at all..and I not feeling in the mood to take the tank...

Hey pete what are you doing here so early!!! LOL Tomas the little one woke me up at 7 am LOCAL and just could not sleep again!!! so I started searching for the solution on my fuel gauge...I gathered some info that I will test today on the boat!!!

Sounds like it worked before the engine work correct? Have you checked anything yet? Wiring?

IT did..yes yesterday I check but without the ign on so I had no readings...I will perform some testing today...my sender has two leads one with a red wire (hot 12v?) and another with 2 wires (one white one black) whick one I want to remove to check if the gauge pegs out) the red one?

The end of the float is mounted to a variable resistor. The more resistance there is, the less current will flow. In a fuel tank, the variable resistor consists of a strip of resistive material connected on one side to the ground. A wiper connected to the gauge slides along this strip of material, conducting the current from the gauge to the resistor. If the wiper is close to the grounded side of the strip, there is less resistive material in the path of the current, so the resistance is small. If the wiper is at the other end of the strip, there is more resistive material in the current's path, so the resistance is large.
The gauge is basicaly a heat coil wrapped around a pointer and the more current passed through the hotter and softer it gets causing the gauge to rise.

Well gauge its working..the problem its with the tank sending unit..it works..but from certain amount of fuel and up...less than 8 gallons no readings..higher than that it starts to read...I check it out..as with some movements I was able to remove it from the tank in its original position. The float had some fuel inside....but when I shaked it to see if it had a leak not a drop came out of it...LOL also a little piece of copper in a half C shape fall out..I guess its half of the resistor..and thats why I get the half measurement.....
So the solution its to keep the tank always FULL!!! LOL

Mine is kinda doing the same thing . If I fill the tank it will read full until I burn some fuel off. Then the gauge snaps back and forth from full to empty . It worked fine before I pulled the tank , so I know when I was banging the tank around upside down cleaning it, I had to of broken the unit .
