| I have an 87 2001, had it out today and it is taking on water into the bilge, it looks like it is coming from the driveshaft area, just trickiling in, is it normal to take on water in this area, or is there a fix, I searched for it and seen something about repacking it, any help would be appreciated, its not bad but I am new to the inboard boats, thank god it has a new bilge pump and the auto bilge works |

How quikley is it coming in? Is it dripping or running in? How often is the bilge kicking in? Sounds like you might need to tighten or replace the packing or install a dripless one. But yes it is suppose to be dripping some. ------------- ...those who have fallen and those who will. |

Try tightening it first like Ryan mentioned. Yes, it does need to drip because the packing is water lubricated. Go light on the packing nut - 1/8 turn increments. Run the boat around the lake after each adjustment and then make sure the packing gland isn't running hot. | thanks for the replies, I took the boat out again today, and pulled the trans inspection plate off from floor behind engine cover, I can turn the shaft, but the nut with the wire on it has water coming in from around it, how do you go about tighteneing this thing up, looks weird to me, I don't want to screw anything up, its running in not dripping, still doesn't fill up the bigle that fast, but I would like the leak to get down to a small drip, any help on what to turn and what not to turn will help alot, thanks |

First, cut the safety wire. The large nut towards the trans is the packing nut. It's the one you want to tighten but directly aft of it is a jam nut. No Name, Yes, at least get your first name up in your profile. I feel once you stick around CCfan you'll see that in most cases we do respond with first names. I feel CCfan, unlike some sites, is really a close group and the reason first names are used. Don't worry, we're not out there fishing to get personal information! Posting your location is great too. Tighten up the packing but do keep a eye on it. Too tight can actually do more damage by scoring up the shaft. If you can't get it down to 5 or 6 drips per minute, we'll get you through a repack. | did the diaries tonight, got an email saying it will take up to 3 days to get it online, so we are just waiting now, thanks again, I need to try to tighten it first, then I can water test it maybe a couple more times before I need to winterize it, I definately need a walkthough on the winterize, got some things printed off on that but don't want to miss nothing and risk my block cracking over the winter, thanks |

Usually is a snug tight. When I adjusted mine I did it the in the water. Using 1/8 increments until I got 5/6 drop per min, or 1 every 10 sec when the boat was in gear. Since then I replace with the Gore-tex and I had it set up for 1 drop per minute. |

Great shop! They are working on my '87 now, straight piping it, repacking the driveshaft and rudder, new sound system, winterizing, and storing it until March. Might even let them work on my '88 Donzi Classic 22!  ------------- "To profit from good advice requires more wisdom than to give it" |
