Worlds most efficient internal combustion engine?
How about a turbocharged, direct injected, two stroke diesel putting out a mere:
5.6 million lb/ ft of torque!

No need for extra ballast in the 230!

That's a pretty nice feature to be able to walk through your oil pan. I had an engines class in college where we got to go through the co-gen plant at the school, engines that size are very different from every thing you know about a small block ford.

The 73 is work in progress, got it wet on labor day. Too bad it had a nasty sounding intermittent knock and enough blow by to pump oil out of the dipstick tube. Pulled the heads last weekend and found the problem, the #7 cylinder had water sitting in it for a LONG time, the bore was very pitted and eroded. The transmission leaked at the rear seal...
The good news: its a great excuse to enjoy some hospitality at the BBC, Reid may have a short block for me, Eric's helping me with the transmission, it'll all be good in the end!

MarineDiesel continues to make waves with the first 'True Diesel Powered Tow Sport Propulsion System'. MarineDiesel recently installed their MD300 Hammerhead Supercharged V8 'Drop In' marine diesel engine for Correct Craft.

Which makes you wonder how they can claim its efficiency. How do they have any idea how much friction loss there is in that thing?
And to Eric's comment about evolution towards diesels...definitely true...and it's a good thing for me! (read: employed by diesel mfg'er)

The 8V-71 in my charter bus is an older Detroit which is supercharged and 2-cycle. Low RPM high torque. 70 MPH is only 2100 RPM. 4.5 to 5 MPG.
The engine no longer meets EPA; therefore, not made.

Diesel technology has changed so much in the last 20 years, computer controlled injectors that fire twice, valves controlled by solenoids to change opening times, many innovations...(no camshafts)
i was on tug a couple months ago, too meet epa regulations the engine was running at 1500 horse and once certified by them, they were turned back up with the push of a couple buttons to the 1900 hp range....cant do that with a gas engine, very fuel effiecient and pollution friendly

Craig,
You're a engineer so I'm surprised with your comment. With a calculated surface area of all friction points and the known coefficients of those areas, it's easy.

im doing a 5.9 cummins now out of a boat, long ass stroke, 20 to 1 compression..precision. Gary it will come to a point that when running you wont even know it was a diesel, diesel engines carry a phantom with them and everybody thinks they smell, thier dirty, thier noisy

I guess my thinking on it was on a scale this large, there has got to be some grossly large error between theoretical & actual values.

You're right on the nose with this Eric. Injectors now fire pre, main, and post events to help control fuel burn (emissions). No more cam-shafts to mechanically actuate the injectors either, instead a high pressure common rail with computer controlled solenoids for each cylinder means injection events can be controlled in a very dynamic way, simply by the engine's computer. Getting rid of the camshaft has significantly reduced engine noise as well

I would say there is about 10 years left on gas engines, they too will be memories,
Damn good time for CC to crack the whip on the R and D department, put a couple of these boats at the Masters and everybody would want one, you go down a whole new avenue with diesel engines, you could have power settings customized for Barefooting or for tubing, or then for wakeboarding and at the end of the day you will burn half of the fuel, A few years back I re-powered a 38 Chris, pulled the BBC's, installed 3116 cats, the end result: 11 mph faster over factory rated speed and almost exactly half gph fuel burned (less)...need more be said?

Boat engine : in-board diesel engine 450 hp
(shaft-drive) Marine diesel
MD-VGT-32 / MD-TSC-32
This is our top of the line GM based 6.6L commonrail engine that that comes in a 350-500hp configuration, there is a turbo version MD-VGT-32 and a twin supercharged version MD-TSC-32 This engine is intended for the ultimate in performance applications and high speed boats. With it¹s up to 500 hp, 450kg, compact dimensions, this monster of the diesel world has the appearance that will make all other high performance engines look old and tired. This is the most powerful looking and performing diesel on the market. Engines are standard equipped with freshwater cooling.
We can deliver all our engines as a compleat engine/sterndrive, jet pump or surface piercing drive package, that includes all hydraulics, extension harness, instrumentpanel, bellhousing, coupler, engine mounts, ownersmanual, etc.

Trouble with mine was, I work to close to home, 7 miles is not good for diesel life. I did like it when I went a long ways, I got 60mpg going to Fla one time, and with twin tanks,20 gal total,I didn't fuel up till Fla border. But on the home to work run I spent more time trying to get it running than actually getting home.

450 hp at 3500 rpm, and well over 600 lb/ft, Eric you could build a stout 72c and run 14 x 20. that would put you at 57mph with 15% slip. That thing would pull like a freight train.

Man, that looks like a great engine!!
But I don't think it will become as popular as one thinks for ski boats over here, cause most ski boats run on LPG in these parts, still a lot cheaper than diesel (and also very environmentally friendly)...

Don't forget diesel can run on bio fuel so just think all chip shops in Belgium and all that cheap oil, so it could be a bag of chips and 5 gallons of old oil only down side the smell from the exhaust can make you feel hungry so it back to the chip shop.
So you grow it, cook with it, then ski with it, sounds environmentally friendly to me.
Thanks 65' cuda for giving it a go with a prop to handle Diesel Power, come on the prop guys and the engineers here what would it take to run the 550hp @3500 Diesel?
sorry got the name wrong way round.

Of course Roger, if you put it that way... Let's start to look around for a diesel engine for my boat then!! LOL
It would be very cheap indeed. And since my wife owns a sandwich and snack bar, we could immediatly reuse our old oil in the boat. Saves us the weekly trip to the recycling park!

Yes Kris and if you get the wife a van she would clean up at the lake with the smell making everyone hungry which would make more oil so you would be in the boat more, what a plan there something in this recycling thing .

Kris I think your right too, I do like the idea of diesel but that turbo one has got to come in around $20,000 then there is this problem with all that low end power, I'm no expert on props or how much the prop shaft can take but I'm guessing a 1 inch shaft with a taper is not the one with the pitch you would run on the prop.
Then you have the gearbox/drive if that could take it too, if not more work for Eric.
As for my tub shall be back on it more now finished all my diggers and dumper truck rebuilds will post something I am trying that you may use on your boat when the time comes the guys will soon tell me if its rubbish idea.
But you may have seen on a post I have the upholstery sorted out, got the idea off here

UK, remember, the HP is absorbed at the prop...in theory you could put 10,000 hp in front of these same props as the 351"s use, and nothing will change. when you start changing the diameter and pitches is when you get into a gray area, but these boats could easily except an 1.250 shaft. there are many transmissions that can handle these engines, in fact a 71c, Borg Warner, as long as you dont go crazy on the D and P of the prop.
with this engine you would see a substantual increase in economy, but with the same prop you wouldnt see performance gains, maybe a better hole shot lol

ha, i disconected myself and have never seen that video, that boat is one of the reasons Im in business for myself, he did mention on the lake Erie run and i remember saying it to him except in my words "this mter fr is going to break in half" I always got bumped for bigger names which was fine with me cause i got free helicopter rides. but its in ink on the toledo to buffalo run. i can remember one time the exhaust pipes were cracked and we were scheduled to run at 7:00 that morning. I found a guy to weld them in St. Petersburg at 10:00 that night, we decided to tip a few...a few, we went to some sht hole and welded these stainless pipes up eliminating the flex where they were cracked, i got in at 4:30 am, and at 5:30 the owner is calling me to clean the sea strainer. its 36 nylock nuts that are only accessible with a 1/4 ratchet. he was screaming at me because i couldnt find 6" stainless flex tube at midnight. im undoing these nuts and he is screaming.
I looked at him and i repeat...f you and th fin horse you rode in on, also doing this in front of the Cat execs.
that leveled the playing field and he never screamed at me again.
among all this i was running his service department. do i like boats? when i get paid to fix them lol
