I went to change the tranny fluid in my 1991 196, and it was engine oil, not the normal pink dextron 3. Is there any reason for this, does it do the same job and is there any reason i cant change back to the dx3? If i am to stick with the engine oil option, is there a specific one I should use?
Many thanks
Chris

Chris - Dexron III is the best to use in the tranny. You should just change it twice using the Dex III & that will flush the old oil out.

The early 1.23 boxes specified 20w oil... but like Chris suggested, the ATF is recommended. Stick with conventional Dex/Merc or Dex III. Do NOT use synthetic, and avoid high mileage formulations if you can. It may take a few changes to get all the 20w oil out, but no problem- Ive been told the 2 fluids coexist just fine.
