Hey guys,
Some of you already know, but picked up the 1991 Ski Nautique below on ebay on Saturday. It has now started it's long jerney down under tonight.

I haven't seen it in person, I do know it's be a bit of a project, & but it actually doesn't look too bad. Just have to track down all the bits & pieces that have been taken off it.!

Except we'll call it

Andrew is there any funny characters in the name of picture. Characters like _ / * are reserved characters and cannot be used in the uploaded files.

Looks like it was in pretty good condition from Ebay pics. The price was right anyway. Looking forward to seeing more pictures. Hope most of the interior was there for you. Have you organised to have it loaded in a container yet?

Yeah I got some additional pics + the larger versions of the pics from ebay. Interior that is there appears to be in good condition, just dirty. Captains chair and front observer seat back & corner cussions are there. Front seat base cussion is missing. There is no rear seat at all, but it appears that there never was one originally. There are no holes or clips, plus there is a big "Correct Craft Inc" decal on the inside above the tank. Possibly a lower spec'd interior.?

Exterior looks reasonably good also. A few minor scratches. Hull isn't too oxidized & may only need cut / polish work

Trailer appears to be very good with new tires.

Question 1 - Engine

Engine is Protec ignition with carb induction. I was under the impression that it was the throttle body induction that gave problems.?

Is that correct or is it the ignition / dizzy / coil pacs that are the problem.?

Chopper, we have a 93 sport with/had the Protech system on it over here in NZ. It was the coil packs that seemed to go on us. After a couple of years and some frustraing times we have just upgraded to a MSD dizzy. Best thing we have ever done.

no big deal to convert to ei and dizzy. At least you dont have the expense of buying a carb to replace the throttle body, like I did. Best of luck.

Chris there are lots of variables, mostly concerning shipping method.

Excluding inland transport costs, a ballpark figure would be around $4k USD in a container and up around $8k for "roll on roll off" for a boat of this size.

Hey Seb,
unless the dash is up under the bow out of sight, it's a gonner.

I am considering a custom dash as it is very unlikely that I will find genuine CC dash in Australia.

No- tilt wheel didnt become an option until '93. You may be able to retrofit, though.

Andrew, that is a sweat deal! The engine is worth that! You know your boat inspired the look of my rebuild so don't make me go get a 91 just so I can follow your lead again . I can't afford another one!!

Good luck and I am sure after a good wet sanding that exterior will look like new again and you don't have to worry about stringer rot correct? Wasn't it 91 they started using composite stringers or was it 92?

Can't wait to see some pics of it completed!

Peace!

Hey AKA,
Thanks for the props.! Glad I could be of some assistance - even though you put in far more work & effort than I.! But don't worry, I'm not planning to do too much to the 91. Probably restore the gel & replace the decals. I do have a tower from a 1996 Ski Nautique that I picked up for the 1989 but never used in my garage. I will probably fit that, and maybe a bimni.

I'll see what it's like when it arrives. From all reports, it seems to have been looked after up until it was stolen. But I don't want to get ahead of myself just in case.

The main priority will be to get the missing parts & get it up & running again

No it will still have wood. Composite wasn't officially introduced until 1993. This may influence how long I keep it for.

The main reason I posted it here was to share the process with CCF members. (And to find the bits I need)

The boat was loaded into the container & delivered to Port on 2 Nov, and departed on 9 Nov. should arrive here on 18 Dec.

Sadly no pics of it being loaded as the shipping agent I used was away (SEMA show.?). I guess I'll just have to wait & get some when she arrives.

I really like how the front seat does that. That might be my next project. It is wood now so it would be cool to see if I could make a fiberglass one and get it to flip up like that. But I am also planning on mounting my amps on the back so that would screw with that design.

Can't wait to see what you do with her. How do the stringers look?

I do have some other details, but I don't want post them on the forum as their not my details to post.

I have the title, which indicates that the previous owner is from Pleasanton CA. Looks like it was a one owner boat too as the title was issued in 1991 & was only transfered to the insurance company.

Chopper,

I spoke to the previous owner of your boat. Nice guy.

The boat was stolen in July. The previous owner took the money from his insurance company and has purchased a 95 SNOB.

The boat was originally a promo boat used at Bell Aqua in Sacramento California. The promo driver was guy named Gustafson, and his son was a comp skier. It was reported that the boat pulled jump at the Nationals in Bell Aqua. He believes that was in 91.

The previous owner bought the boat after 1 season with 120 hours on the boat. It had 875 hours on it when stolen. The previous owner reports he never had a single problem with the boat, and serviced it each season.

The boat has never seen salt water. After Bell Aqua it spent its life on the California Delta. Now that he has told me which boat it was, I can say I passed that boat on its lift many times. It was located about 15 minutes from my house by water.

The boat was hotwired, gutted, and left floating in a large slough about 25 minutes by water from the site it was stolen.

He said it was a carbureted engine with a breakerless ignition. I do not know if that means pro tech, and neither did he.

I invited the previous owner to check out the website and follow your progress on the restore. He said he was very happy to hear the boat had gone somewhere that it would be used.

That's all I got.

G'day all,
A quick update for you all.

I picked up the boat today.

It finally cleared our customs. The biggest delay was a government "environmental" agency that needed to confirm that the boat did not have air conditioning or refrigeration.

Anyway, she's finally home & tucked away. I haven't had much time to check it out, but the initial inspection was good. Very minimal damage from the journey. There's a couple of marks on the rub rail, but that's about it.

Floor seems very solid. I haven't found any soft spots at all. The carpet is really good with only one small wear patch that I have found, but it's where the observer seat base rubs. Vinyl is in good shape. No splits, but the captains chair has a scuff on it from rubbing against the wheel fender that was cut off & "placed" thoughtfully inside the boat (on my seat) for the trip.

There are a few chips in the gel on the port side, but these appear to be pre existing. Nothing major, but will test my ability to colour match gel. Other than that, the hull appears to be i excellent shape. No spider cracks. It's got some oxidation on the maroon, but not too bad, I'd say a day of wet sanding will sort that out. I don't think I'll paint this one Pete.! But I probably will update the decals to something a little newer.

So overall I'm pleased with the initial inspection.

The colour even goes well with my truck!

I'll post up some pics when I have some more time.

Merry Christmas.!

Chopper--Andrew

Have we spoken about the SN Plaques going back on the dash pod?
Did the boat have the pod or have you acquired it by now?
Ok- yes I remember now-we have spoken. I'm sure it will need BRAND NEW PLAQUES!
E-mail me with your shipping address and what you want the Personalized Plaque to say so we can get this on the way Down Under.

I think you have my e-mail Mr. Mundt.

That's great news! Congrats! No stress cracks and no softspots in the floor is a very good sign of decent stringer conditions. It probably means they kept it stored inside or always let it dry after taking it out.

Can't wait to see some pictures! That's one of the best Christmas presents I have ever heard of!

Merry Christmas!

Well Brian mentioned that it was stored on a lift. It definately looks like it'll be good enough to use straight away without any stringer repairs.

Chopper will be hard to fit the boat under the tree.

Sounds like it is in better condition than you expected? The purchase price looks even better now. How about the trailer?

When you get a chance post up some arrival pictures.

One thing I did pickup when importing mine was that every one will be a different. The government departments seem to have many different interpretations of their own regulations.

Tree.???

Well I think condition is not too bad at all really. I will have to find some white gel coat & try my hand at colour matching.

Trailer is pretty good too. some minor damage from being strapped down in the container. It's too wide though for our roads though, so some mods will be required there.

I took some pics yesterday, but have been busy getting the 89 ready for it's new owner. I'll download them & post them up.

Hell yeah I'm excited about getting it up & running again. took it real easy turning it in case something had "fallen in"

Goal is to have it up & running for feb.

I'm off until the 4th, but I'm not allowed to touch it as I have too many other things on my "to do" list. lucky I had to clean the shed tonight hey I might sneak it out for a quick wash tomorrow & clean the interior when I do the 89's tomorrow also.

Andrew, I didn't realize you were selling the 89! You primarily wake board don't you? Do you think the 92 will put up as good of wake as the 89? I heard after the 2001s the wake flattened out quite a bit.

Posted By: Chopper

Hey Joey,
It's just time for a change. The 89 goes on Saturday.

I haven't boarded behind a 90-96 Ski Nautique yet, but I have taken a buddy out who has a 94, and he mentioned that the wake was similar between the two hulls. I guess I will find out soon enough. We managed to get a decent wake out of our old 98, so I'm sure it will be ok.

I really only picked up the 91 for a bit of a project anyway, so we'll see what happens.

Well the 89 went on Saturday. Michael (new owner) mentioned that he would post up here, so make him feel welcome guys.

I took to the red gel with some cheap cutting compound (read gritty sludge in a can) on the weekend. It's actually doing a really good job at getting rid of the oxidation. hopefully with a couple of passes with this stuff (folloewd by polish etc), I will get a good shine back.

I'm sure it's been asked before, but can you still get decals for a 1991.? Mine look OK from a distance, but shabby up close as the edges are lifting etc.

Frist modification was to the trailer. Gone is the gunnel rubber destroying bow stop.

It will be replaced with something like this. Will probably relocate the winch post too.

A couple of hours with the heat of a flood light restored the gunnel rubber resonably well to close to original shape.

I would like to do that on mine as well but I don't have the support under the front of the boat like you have. I have been thinking about adding a roller there.

Not to thread jack but does anybody know who would sell a bow stop like that to work on my trailer?

Your trailer is slightly different to my old CC trailer, but I'm sure you could modify it slightly.

I converted my original CC trailer from this:

to this:

I will use a roller from now on over the carpeted V as it put a water stain on the hull.

Alternatively you could add a centre section & use a bow stop / winch post like I did on the new trailer.

Did you fabricate that yourself or buy it premade? That is exactly what I want to do!

If you are referring to the carpeted V on the original CC trailer, I fabricated it myself from the old bow stop pieces. The roller / winch post on the new trailer was pre made.

Picked up my first lot of parts yesterday.

Thanks to Dan (91 Nautique) I have an original 1991 PCM Holley marine carby, fuel line, alternator & flame arrestor.

Big thanks also to my neiqhbour for picking them up for me on the other side of the country.

Just need the RWP & ignition leads now for a test fire of the engine.

I was looking at the heads on the 91 the other day. They have 2 raised bars on the end of the heads. I know the GT40p's have 3 raised bars.

My previous 89 had none at all. What do the 2 raised bars signify.?

Iv'e put them in the meter box- he can pick them up anytime, he drives right past my place to get to his brothers.

OK guys,
Here's my next question.

If I get time, I am going to attempt to start the motor next weekend.

With no dash pod or key, what is going to be the best way to "hotwire" it.?

Chopper you should be able to hotwire it via the solenoid at the rear of the eng. You'll have to bridge a wire to make the 'ignition' (eg turning the key) then touch something (screwdriver etc) between either the poles on the solenoid or the starter itself to turn her over. The wiring diagram in the ref section is pretty clear (if your's is still wired this way, ours isn't). Wire 21 bridged to wire 42, the fusable link, should do it.
Have you priced up a new distributor yet? You won't regret it once you start having problems with your ProTech system:)
