I was thinking of replacing all of the light bulbs in my 71 marauder with LED bulbs. They are expensive but should last forever. Has anyone used them and is it worth the money?

I heard people doing the swap. They have bought them on ebay. I heard it looks very good.

David,
I'll probably get ragged on for this one just like my point set, fan belts and RWP impeller maintenence/longevity but here goes. I have yet to replace a bulb in ether the bow or stern nav lights of ether my 54 or 64 and my 77 I've only had for 3 years. Now, I do use them at night but it would be really hard to estimate how many hours are on the bulbs. All I'm saying is they do last for a really long time! Are LED's worth it?

My experience with LEDs......... They are certainly brighter and longer lasting and generally GREAT if:

1- Fit isn't a problem....... most LED bulbs are larger and in tight lamp fixtures, fitment is an issue.

2- Color isn't a problem........ because of color hue, intensity and LED placement, they don't do well for most older style plastic lenses on bow lights (the white/blue color of the LED shines through).

If those two factors are not issues....... they are great. But those two factors are commonly issues on older boats....

Peter,

I know the LEDs are overkill but I am currently replacing burnt bulbs and figured since I was in there I might as well put the good stuff in. I was more curious if anyone had problems with the LEDs.

Thanks for the response.

BTW...... Most of us have seen bulbs melt or change older plastic lenses. LEDS won't do that......... So perhaps you get more than just bulb replacement cost benefits........

I agree...the reliability, lower temps, and durability of the LEDs make it had to turn down. I keep everyone posted if I have any problems.
