What is the best method to clean the outside of the boat to get the yellowish stain off from the water in our lake? Is there something homemade that works out great?

Some people are happy with a homemade concoction of 50/50 Lysol toilet bowl cleaner and hydrogen peroxide. Personally, I havent found anything (home made or not) that can touch Marykate On/Off hull cleaner. Its super strong and acidic, but works like magic with no scrubbing, even when diluted. You can find it at West Marine or online. Just be sure to wear junk clothes and eye protection... and dont let it sit very long on painted surfaces (like the trailer). ------------- |

Our boat spends the summer May - October in the river near the ocean in brackish water. After a few weeks the hull gets real green.I try to pull it once through the summer to cleanand wax the hull and change oil etc and have found that FSR ( any marine store) works great. Find a janitorial supply house and buy toilet bowl cleaner. You will go broke buying it any other way!!

There is a jel called FSR (fiberglas stain remover) You apply it on with a brush or rag, let it sit 5min and wash it off. The area will need to be waxed but it works well.
There is also a similar product called Y-10. There is a concentrated powder that you mix with water called Slimy Grimy. This is more for cleaning a dirty scummy hull than just the stain. Different cleaners (chemicals) work better on different build ups on your hull. What works good for tannins in Wisconsin might not be as successful removing algae in Florida.

I think if all of these chemicals were examined you would find that they are all acidic. I will grab the toilet bowl cleaner out of the closet and post later on what it is. +1 on the trailer. Wish I had pics of what mine looked like before I painted it. Tim ------------- |

+1 on the toilet bowl cleaner but heed the warnings fully. This stuff is caustic and will ruin trailer paint but far more important is to wear rubber gloves and eye protection. Rinse your skin immediately if you get any on yourself, it burns, I know.
I just cleaned my 81 this fall before putting it away but I removed it from the trailer. My hull was filthy but the Toilet bowl cleaner (The Works) took all the staining off without any scrubbing. Give it a few minutes to work and rinse it off. DO NOT get it on any painted surfaces or your trailer bunk carpeting. ------------- You can’t change the wind but you can adjust your sails |

I use the 'Works' TB cleaner. A good time to do this is when the boat is off the trailer.
