Holy cr@p...
But then again, they are very expensive boats, for a select crowd...

I had seen a picture somewhere of Riva's storage facility. It was a cave used as a wine cellar/boat storage because of the perfect conditions for wood boats. Just the right temp and humidity for long erm storage.

Pete, as I know I dont see better than most, I took a closer look at the pic again and realised what I though was a HUGE tracking fin is a boat stand.
anyway, now that you're over this thread, could you describe or point me where to read on what cold molding is about?

Luch,
Cold molding has been around for quite some time but I'd have to say the Gougeon Brothers were the big pioneers in developing thier West brand epoxy system. They were big into ice boating and wanted to build lightweigt streamlined shells. Cold molding really is just like buiding a fiberglass boat except instead of glass cloth, wood veneers are used.
The term "cold" is used because of the previous method of hot molding wood hulls. Many small 12 to 16 foot hulls were made with the hot technique. The process involved placing layers of wood veneer and phenolic resin over a mold, vacuum bagging it and then putting it into a retort. There the heat would cure the resin.

Most beautiful boat ever made. Bar none. Though I do prefer the Aqua interiors to the orange ones.

Pete, perhaps you'd be interested on taking a look at this:
http://www.borello.com.ar/Plantilla_embarcacion.asp?id=914 %20 -
These were made a few years ago in our country, dont know if they still do and how much does one cost nowadays.
Hull is fiberglass and structure is glass over wood. Then all is covered in Cedar veneer.
My friend is also selling his classic argentinian woody.

http://articulo.mercadolibre.com.ar/MLA-79796078-lancha-clasica-de-madera-giordano-_JM%20 - Giordano wood boat
The boat name is Darling
Engine is a GMC V8 marinized by Chris Craft rated at 190HP, it's attached to a paragon 1:1 transmission.
(My guess is the engine is a 5.0. it has a Rochester Q-jet. It pulls your ass off the varnished seats)
Translation from the article:
This boat was the last wood boat built and designed by Giordano boatcrafts in 1968, specially made for the owners Victor and Osvaldo Giordano, kept it until year 2000 when it was purchased by current owner Elias Carranza Saroli. Actually the boat is still factory original, instrumets (tach, temp, oil pressure, amp) as well as all wood (cedar) and engine.

No, the state of Michigan will get him when he goes for hull tags and the title transfer!!! I've got a feeling that he isn't worried about that cost though!

It takes 2 to tango at an auction. So someone else with the wherewithal to play in this arena thought it was worth very nearly the $750K + fees + taxes.
