Is it possible to put vortec heads on a 1980 engine?
other than a new centerbolt valve cover and new intake what other parts are needed? any performance gain that worth the change?

yes, and a fine upgrade normally, unless you can find some older .202 fuelie heads, double humps on the outside ends, you can hog out the ports to open also,

The intake bolts are streight down not angled. You can hog out your intake and it will work but I'd get a vortec intake. The heads are worth about 40 HP just bolting them up.

I have a nice set of Vortec heads that I just got in on a crack block job. Also have a Carb aluminum PCM Vortec manifold with bolts all for $650.00

Motor came in with fresh water 600 hours, Freeze cracked block that still runs great, just has a 3 inch crack above the freeze plugs. Since the heads are comming off I would have them reconditioned before they go back on something else, then again thats me. Usally that runs about $75 per head. $650.00 comes with valve covers and a new never run PCM High rise dual plane intake manifold that came on the replacement motor . If you want me to have the heads reconditioned tack on another $150. You want steel valve covers or plastic?

these would be for a friend that has a volvo 290a (chevy based of course) engine from the 1980´s
a valve broke while running and ruined one cylinder sleeve and filled the engine with water..so now they are decidingwether to have the heads rebuilt or buy new...
will those fill that aplication?
as for the vc plastic or steel any price diference? why plastic? is it lighter? or just cheaper..

but on the other hand sound nice upgrade for my 1973 l-82 vette..are they so?

The small block Chevy changed very little in nearly 50 years of production. The exhaust is the same. I have never installed late model Vortec heads on a 80's-early 90's edition Small block. I am assuming they would work just could not utilize the vortec roller lifter assembly. If one wanted to use roller motor technology one would have to go aftermarket.
As far as the rocker covers I just threw up to versions of poison, both are the same price I have a number of pairs.

YES put you might have to change push rods, I would have to ask my friend who did this on his cruiser last year if it is a direct replacement

AS far as all replies I was given here and in the corvette forum, its doable and all the old parts can be reused. Chris I´ll wait your comments on this friend..If he had to change pushrods and the lenght he put in there.
Whats is a fact it will be a significant performance gain....
