Does anyone know what the proper rpm range is for a older model(1976)pcm 302? Thanks

They claim intermittent service MAXIMUM of 4400 rpms. continuous of 3600 rpm. I run my mustang 17 at about 4700 or so wide open throttle, but rarely keep it there. It allows for props of less pitch for a better pulling power.

Jeff, Is that right? I've been running my '68 289 up to 5300 or 5400 and cruising at 4800. Maybe I need a bigger prop?

Jim in houston, it certainly sounds it to me! Unless your engine was modified heavily, your not gaining any extra. A few pithces higher would make the engine last longer if your cruisin around the lake. The prop you have is good for pulling a dozen people out of the hole. You will get a heck of alot better gas mileage with the right prop. My mustang 17 has a prop(12x15RH) where the hole shot isnt great, but i can cruise all day on a tank and the top end is about the same. I also have a 12x13RH for serious pulling.

I'm with Jeff on this one. I,m still running the original prop 12x15 RH on my 1970 Mustang 235 HP. Max RPM is 4500 RPM @ 42-45 mph. I'm a 200+ pounder and it pulls me up on a traditional slalom just fine. Any RPM's greater than about 4000 for extended periods of time aren't good on large V8 engines anyway. Unless of course you like to rebuild every few years.

Continuous service on my 302 in 4100 and intermittent is 4400. You can dowload the manuals from this site, and they have all of the useful info on all the older models.

The newer engines have a bit higher rating like 5000 rpm max.
