Today the vet took our dachshund to put her down.

Long story short, we have been having issues for a while now with her being aggressive with our other dog and with the kids. It has escalated into several fights with the other dog causing harm, breaking skin, drawing blood.

We discussed the behavior with the vet, after the 2nd visit for our other dog to be stitched up, and he feels the behavior was headed in a dangerous direction.

After quit a bit of discussion, my wife and I decided it was the best thing to do to put her down. We sat down and talked to the kids about it last night. Our oldest is taking it the hardest. We told them to be sure to spend some time with her loving on her. My oldest would just hold her, sobbing uncontrollably and telling her he was going to miss her.

Such a sad day. I think this is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do in my life.

Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

Thanks!

Been there done that, what a bummer, I feel your pain!

Bought the Book Dog Heaven for the kids, I think it helped.

If your local library doesn't have it send me your address and we can mail ours to you.

I feel for you and your kids! I lost my German Shepherd to a similar situation (sickness leading to aggressive behavior) and it was one of the worst days I can remember.

I had to put down 2 Chiuhaua's and the 3rd died of old age in the last 6 years.1 of the dogs was only 6 years old but had been used as a stud dog for 3 years and he developed hip problems and a heart condition. Buried 2 in the back yard, and 1 at my dad's. Rico Sauve was the stud, Poco Miguel was the other and PeeWee Herman was the 1st.
My wife had to get 2 more,Cocoa Cabana and Jazzy now.

I put my 13 year old lab down last May. Her heart was enlarged due to fluid. It was one of the hardest things that I had ever done. Time will heal, but I still think about my dog all of the time.

Sorry,

Donald

Thanks guys. She was a good dog and we loved her very much. I felt like such a jerk this morning when I handed her over to the vet. She looked at me like "What's going on here". If it weren't for her getting the aggressive behavior, she'd still be here.

I'll check on the book and let you know.

If any of you have suggestions for another dog it would be nice. Our older dog is pretty much a mutt that is mostly yorkie poo...really sweet dog. We'd like to get a smaller dog, 20-30# max that is great with kinds and other dogs. We'd also like to incorporate a dog into our family lake activities.

Suggestions?

As far as suggestions go....We've got two Golden Retrievers and LOVE them to death. We live on a lake and they swim together daily and love riding in the pontoon (not allowed in the CC's)

Katie is my pup, going on 2 now, and spends every moment of the day with me. She gets to go to work, run errands, work out, go on vacation...the works. She weighs in about 35-40 lbs full grown and was bred to be a smaller, house dog. Our other golden is a little bigger, 45 lbs and 6 years old. She's the sweetest dog ever. Great with kids and extremely obedient. I've got 8 cousins under the age of 7 and the girls are great with them!

I know you mentioned a smaller dog but for us, Katie is just the right size!

So Sorry Okie,
We have 2 dogs Obie & Coco. Obie is a founder and a good boy(he's about 6 ish) Coco is a Cock-a-poo I gave her to my wife for Christmas 3 years ago now.
2 Sundays ago a man was walking into the street holding up puppies he had a for sale. As my wife and I drove by I "felt" compelled to stop. What a mess. He is homeless and had 2 puppies (Escomo Spits of sorts) they both were in bad shape(4-6 weeks old). A nice young man in a wheel chair gave him a donation ($150) for one and I gave $100 for the sickest one. I didn't know if it would live thru the night. My wife bathed him, bundled him in a big towel & heating pad. We got him to our Vet.the next morning for a $90 tune up. He was dehydrated and aneemic. My wife gave him love and 24 hr care for 16 days. Yesterday we gave him to my freind at work. The best 200- bucks I ever blew.
So many dogs out there that need help, I feel like we did a little bit of good. Google "polish low land sheep dogs" thats's a cutie.
Again, I sorry and I'll always have a dog.

Okie I know how you feel. When I had to have our 13yr old German Shepherd put down it broke my heart. I said I would never get another dog as they become so much a part of the family. Especially when they grow up with your kids and there are so many family memories.

Well when the kids headed off to college the wife was feeling like a "empty nester" so I got a new puppy to cheer her up. Anakin the labradoodle.

He loves to come out in the boat and is a real chick magnet

I have a confession too, Siberian Husky 14 years old. I made my wife do it, I told her to do it without me knowing...she wasnt attached to the dog. but i had it since she was a pup "the dog" it does seem as if sometimes its harder to see the pets go.
My next door neighbor had a golden and i kept telling him you have to put the dog down, he let the dog pass naturally and I watched from my window, pretty big gathering and a memorial set up next to his house, your really not suppose to bury dogs where i live, it didnt bother me, but he is the type if he could his parents may end up next to the dog

Sorry about your dog Okie. We had to put down our mixed breed terrier "Jasper" last March. He had an enlarged heart and had been on meds for about a year and also had developed an oral tumor which was cancerous and had spread to his lymph nodes. I tried everything I could to keep Jasper around just a little longer. I even took that dog to a dog-oncologist to see if he would be a candidate for a new cancer vaccine that had proven successful in dogs with his type of cancer, but it had already spread to his lymph nodes and with his heart condition it was just not looking good for him... I was a mess when we had to put him down. I still get teary eyed thinking about him. It was like losing our first child, he had been around before we had our oldest and our three kids had grown up with him.
My wife swore that we were not going to get another dog... but after about 9 months without a dog, she started sending me pictures at work of dogs she was looking at at http://www.petfinder.com - Petfinder.com . I went to "just look" at this one dog that was on petfinder and the rescue group was going to be at the Petsmart so I went up there to take a "look" at him and ended up bringing him home. While I was in the store, this lady came up to me and asked the dog I was adopting and asked me if I wanted another... So I took her business card and told her I would talk to my wife about it... I ended up getting that dog off of her the following week! She was a single mother with a busy schedule and the dog(Kobe) was in a cage most of the time... I couldn't leave him there after I had seen him. He was skinny from being caged up all the time and when I went to her house they had him in the cage and they were home!

Take your time in finding a new dog, make sure he is going to fit in with your family and living arrangements before you bring a new dog home. Be sure he has the temperament you are looking for. http://www.petfinder.com - Petfinder.com is a great resource for rescue dogs. It's a great thing to be able to give one of these dogs in need a much needed good home, so be sure to check into a rescue dog before you go to a breeder. The nice thing about looking at them online is that you can learn about them and see pictures before you go and look at them which is good in my case since I want to bring home every dog I see that needs a home. I love dogs, I would probably have 20 of them if I could!

It took two dogs to fill the shoes (paws) of Jasper! They get along great and they are best friends. Our family is not complete without a dog.

I hope you can remember all the great times with your dog, and maybe find another dog someday to add to the family. Very sad indeed...

Jasper (RIP)

Jasper at his last Birthday Party (Not sure who was drinking that Coors light, wasn't me or Jasper!)

Bentley, He's a Brussels Griffon 2-3 years old,

Kobe, the PO said he was a Brussels mix also, but we think he is probably a Wheaten Terrier Mix. He is about 1 year old.

Thanks again guys. Keep the suggestions coming. We're looking a lot online and making a list of possibles, then whittling out what we don't feel fits. We want to get down to 5-6 breeds we like and seriously start looking. We prefer getting a dog from the shelter or a rescue...and a puppy would be best. It looks like several spaniel breeds are good fits for us.

We got the book Dog Heaven from the library and read it with the boys. It seemed to help some for them. Also, "Heaven" by Randy Alcorn has a section that talks about animals and the Biblical view, which is good for the situation.

Well...this happened rather suddenly. We've made a list of several breeds and had it a bit narrowed down, so the search would begin. I went by Petsmart after Home Depot earlier, and just fell in love with this guy. He is a Poodle and Terrier mix about 1.5 years old. Awesome personality and seems very loving and well behaved. I took the wife and kids to see him and there really wasn't any question. He is a rescue dog that was discovered in someone's barn in a small town nearby. It was with a family for a while, but seemed to try to "go after" their cats a little too much for their liking so he just went back to the rescue last week.

Say hello to Alvin.

We're looking forward to him being a special part of our family. Missy isn't too sure about him yet, but I'm sure she will grow to love him.

Know just how you felt Okie. When the time came for our first dog Macie, to go I took her to the Vet 3 times and could not leave her. Had to take her the day we left for Tennessee so I had to leave her and just go on. Mother in law gave my wife a Springer but that dog was all mine. Lost Miss Mindy to a stroke Christmas night '01. Did not want to bother a Vet on the Holiday. Thought she'd make the morning. Passed with me holding her on the floor next to our bed. She was 14. I have her ashes and picture on the shelf. Me and her will go in Norris lake together. Fortunatly we had brought a campground dog home from Norris that Fall. Turned out to be Jo the TN wonder dog. I got chocked up reading all this but it felt good to read the reactions of all the guys on here. Dogs are the best pets!

John,

Yeah, it was really tough. I've talked to a lot of "dog experts" in the last week and they've unanimously said "You did the right thing". It helps knowing it was likely for the best but it still hurt.

Sorry about your dog....that sucks. We put down pour Lab a few years ago.Never easy.

We got a Labradoodle. It is a F1B, which is a Labreadoodle (1/2 and 1/2) bred to a a standard poodle. Has more poodle. Zero shedding, great disposition, travels well. A lot less work than a Lab! I miss my Lab, but with three kids, wide open, we just didnt think we could handle another Lab. No more daily vacuuming and no more getting ready to leave with the car packed, and the Lab comes walking up soaking wet, full of mud, carrying a carcass of some animal!

Well, "Alvin" seems to be fitting in well and seems like a very well behaved dog. He seems to have gotten quickly attached to my wife and gets upset when she isn't around...LOL!

We're throwing around the idea of changing his name. He's only been "Alvin" since the previous family had him so it probably wouldn't be too hard to get him to adapt.

We'll see what happens.

Bath time went well the other day so we're thinking he doesn't appear to really be "afraid" of the water. We're interested to see how he would do on te boat and being on the water.

Also, as far as the cat thing...I'm not real sure what the issue was. We have an outside cat and we took him out to meet her. He didn't seem real interested in pursuing her. Maybe it would be a little different if they were in the same house.

Here's some new pictures and a video. This dog seems like a great fit for us and we're really enjoying him. We've noticed that he tends to cower a fair amount when I discipline him, telling him no or whatever. Much more than if my wife does. My oldest picked something up last night and lifted it up (like you would do with a rolled newspaper) and the dog also cowered. We're wondering if he was treated harshly and that's why he was found in that barn in the first place. We'll work through that with a lot of love. You can tell he is really sensitive. I don't even have to raise my voice to him...a calm "NO" when he does something wrong is all that is needed.

My wife took him on a walk to get the boys from school the other day and he barked at one of the neighbor girls quite aggressively when she came up to pet him. We're not sure what that was all about. I talked to the parents last night and they are all going to come by for a visit to see him and we'll see if he reacts differently. He may have just felt uncomfortable or something. He didn't do the same thing to any of the other kids.

Any suggestions on helping him get over the cowering?

Folks get really attached to their pets. That makes sense. However, if I heard that something happened to Reid's Skipper or Boatie or Alan's Bodie, me and my daughters would be pretty sad too. It doesn't take long to appreciate a good dog, even if it belongs to a friend you only see a few times a year.

Well, we've been adjusting to Schatzi being gone and loving Alvin (we're pretty much calling him Alvi). Our older dog, Missy, got another growth on her neck that is swelling, then oozing, then subsiding. We talked to the vet and we would have to cut that one out too. He fears Missy has cancer and that is what these growths are. He feels we would just keep cutting them off her and putting her through surgeries with a couple weeks of recoveries each time and he fears it's just going to get worse. As long as they don't break open we don't "have" to put her through that. She doesn't seem to be in any pain, so we're just "treating" this growth for now trying to decide what we're going to do.

Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. We have some tough decisions ahead of us.

I am very sorry for your loss, very excited for you new puppy and also realize their are some tough days still ahead. I only hope you have a supportive vet, ours was great when we had to put our golden retriever puppy Madi (she was 13 yrs old but still our puppy) down last summer. I still say it was the hardest thing I ever had to do. Quite a site when me, my wife, and our three girls went strolling through the waiting room crying like babies, I hope they didn't loose to many customers that day.

We miss our Madi everyday, but yesterday we brought home Alexandria, she will be our second golden retriever puppy. Lexi is just 10 weeks old and we look forward to many happy years with her. Hope to see your new pup at Green Lake!

Funny story related to having to put a pet to sleep.
The twelve year old son of one of my co-workers had a friend whose family had recently put their dog "to sleep". Well, a couple of weeks later this son broke his arm playing ball. It was a pretty bad break.
The doctor told the kid that they would have to put him "to sleep" to reset his arm. Poor kid thought he was being put down like his friend's dog.

I am so sorry for your loss.I had to put my great dane down in 05 the vet came to our house becuase it was the most comfortable for her my god that was the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life But the best thing for her She was one of the best dogs that has ever OWNED ME. In Jan. this year out Brittany passed away what a great dog she was she was 11 and looks to have just passed in her sleep whe was playing chaseing bunnies that morning so that was a very sudden loss. Now we have a rescue dalmation who is 18yrs old not doing well at all. So I know what you are going through it is so hard to play god. I worked as a vet tech for many years and could just not do it anymore I could not take the euthansias it was like every dog was mine being put down and sometimes I'd cry more then the owners. I have been looking on petfinder.com for a golden mix. Thinking about the goldendoodles also. But really wanted to rescue there are so many dogs with out homes out there... Again very sorry for your loss and hope that your older dog just goes in her sleep so you don't have to make that call. Alvi is a very cute puppy dog enjoy him.

THE RAINBOW BRIDGE,

There is a bridge connecting heaven and earth. It is called the rainbow bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the bridge there is land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again. They play all day with each other.

There is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them on earth. So, each day they run and play until the day comes when suddenly one stops playing looks up! the nose twitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring! And this one suddenly runs from the group!

You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her in your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again, and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be seperated.

                                          -author unknown

This always brings tears to our eyes it sounds to me like we will all have many puppies to walkk back over that bridge with us... I can not wait to see every single one of mine...
