I have main and secondarystringers almost ready to go in boat. Only two drain holes to glass over before I bed them in.
What are thoughts on predrilling the whole in the Starboard stringer through which the steering cable block mounts. This was one of many areas of rot in original construction.
I was thinking about drilling a 1" or a 1.25inch hole. Filling with epoxy/milledfiber, and drilling a half inch hole in the fill through which the block will mount.

I just slobbered epoxy in the hole, and tightened it down. Not sure if you would get any benefit. You could use 4200 on the bolt and washers, too.

I'm not a fan of mounting it to the wood, i fixed it to the strut with good results. Can't find my picture at the moment.

That is what I have seen done and the block is flipped 180 degrees with the thread stud pointing towards the boat centerline.

Thinking about the bracket option. I may do that.
If I decide to go back to original and mount the block in the stringer, are there any thoughts on whether I should create an epoxy sleeve, as I described above? Would it be worth my time? Would it be any better than just coating with 4200?
Thx,

Brian,
I certainly like the idea but think in this case it's overkill. I'd drill the hole, CPES if you are using it, then some resin in it and then the 4200.

I think Pete's suggestion is pretty good and a lot less work than fabing up a bracket besides it keeps the orginal look too

Decisions, decisions. Good thing I'm not trying to use this boat anytime soon.
Thanks to all for your thoughts.

FWIW-I put mine back as the factory had it with the mods Pete mentioned except that I used thicked epoxy where he has 4200(better or worse?). To your original question, I drilled it after it was glassed in so I could line it up with the tiller arm.

Thx, GottaSki.
I ended up putting a fiberglass fill in a 1.5inch hole in the stringer. But I haven't drilled it out yet. Gives me some time to decide if I want to go with a bracket or drill back through the stringer.
First main was bedded this morning, and is drying. No turning back now.
