Okay I looked through the "Model 70.." manual (the only manual I could find)for Borg Warner Velvet Drive transmissions to see if I was missing anything. According to the manual there is an oil stainer located on the bottom side toward the rear where one of the hoses hooks up, the hose goes to the cooler. So my question is, "Is there a strainer there that needs to be taken out and cleaned?" My boat is a 1984 SN2001 with a Model 10-17-004 Velvet Drive transmission. I can provide pictures tomorrow if needed. Thanks.

Corkey,
I'm sure Eric will be by shortly and comment. I don't feel it's a normal requirement. My Velvet strainer hasn't been out in the 32 years I've owned it.

its a strainer not a filter, the only time I have ever seen one clog is when someone rebuilt they're transmission and wiped everything down with a towel, it was full of lint and starving the pump...

Thanks for the answers. Since I have never had an owner's manual; the periodical maintenance I have done was what the previous owner told meto do 18 years ago. I thought maybe us Minnesotans were missing something.

I also stumbled across this in the manual. When I pulled my strainer out it was clean. I guess it didn't need the attention, but it sure beats knowing it's there and not knowing what the condition of it is.
