Subject: bit the bullet bought a Drysuit FOUND

So I bit the bullet and grabbed a Drysuit...
Its a Bare like the one here
http://barewatersports.com/usa/suits/ultra-dry/ultra-dry.asp - drysuit
Its the only one I could get here at a decent price..$600
I still have to pay for it, so If I don´t use it I can return it.
SO you guys think It will withstand barefooting?
It looks tought
I wanted to BI but having it shipped from us and after taxed price would end the same.
Back to using it what equipment or protection I need to wear under it?

Drysuits aren't near as bad as the water they are protecting you from. I don't barefoot in mine so I can't help you with that part, but I like long underware and fleece in my suit. Something that will wick the moisture away from your body so you don't feel clamy. Take the thin stuff offfirst if it's too hot, that will keep you from feeling the water temp. I also wear a thin vest on the inside, starts to get a little bulky with a regular one.

Ryan..500 is including shipping cost to argentina? if so from there I have to pay 50% customs tax of fob price and shipping..so that makes 250 extra to the number..total cost would be in the $750...
Number could be lowered a touch If the invoice could be "lowered" and stated half the price of the suit..and that way it can lower the base for the tax calculation....
but in an event of damage while shipping insurance will cover only half of it...
My uncle flew yesterday from SF to argentina...I could have ordered the $300 BI on sale and had it ship to his home for him to bring it, but got lazy and when I was about to do it it was late...
Comming again to the quality..what you think its the major difference between the bare and a barefoot one? are seems better? The bare looks very tough.and is very comfy...

500 includes shipping, not sure what customs tax is. Can you explain?
------------- ...those who have fallen and those who will.
|

I'm pretty sure when something comes through customs, they "tax" the recipient a certain percentage of the purchase price/value of the imported product. From what Kapla stated, after the suit, say $500 was paid for (including shipping), the approximate import tax would be around $200. Making the total cost $700. He would have to pay the $200 to customs to get his package.
I'm not sure if it has anything to do with a lack of a free trade agreement or not. Forgive me if my understanding was incorrect.

Hawktique is correct...
every imported package you get has to go through customs and gets a tax rate..for regular people they apply a flat rate of 50% of the value (fob+shipping) as simple as that...
Dependig on the carrier example ups or fedex they will clear customs for you and pay the taxes..but upon delivery they will ask you to refund those charges that are not included and the shipping cost..when you send it on regular mail..you receive a notice in your house that a package is waiting for you at the international post office, there you have a customs office where they open the goods check you are not introducing any forbiden good, check the invoice and make you pay the tax to clear it out...
Its PIA but thats how it works....

I believe it could. If the suit was lost or damaged in shipment, you can only get the valued amount from insurance. It is tough thing to deal with. I'm sure Kapla knows of all the loop holes, and sometimes things get a bit risky with all the customs red tape. They didn't like it at all when they pulled the floor boards on our helicopters (coming back from Iraq in '03) and found a stockpile of AK's and stuff. "How'd that stuff get in there?" "No idea"

It would be suspicious to see such nice suit and only paid $10, This guys can smell scums as they deal all days with guys trying to fool them,
Something in the 250-300 total (including shiping) might work..but tax would be 125-150 then..so cost is always in the 600 range...
Example..Last year I ordered a set of gator WB boots..paid for them 59 and 80 shipping...got to pick them at the terminal..paid 70 tax....boots end up costing $200..triple of the price you pay...
Another thing about the post office is that all int packages go there so depends on the day and hours..other people is there waiting to clear their things...You are lucky if you do all the paperwork in less than 2hours..I have even waited 4 hours sometimes...
I would do all this to save some serious money $200-300, but to save 50 or get even I really wouldn´t do it..it´s a wasted morning..
So as far as price it will always be in the 500-600 range..so no savings at all..Unless the BARE is a POS and will rip in the first use and the BF is top notch that will last forever and worth the effort of waiting for it 10-15 days and then go and spend the morning in customs I think keeping the bare...
I really appreciate your effort on trying help me figure this out..but I been dealing with this all my life LOL
Only way to get items w/o tax Is flying there and bring them as luggage..
Near future I need to go shopping in the US and visit you guys and spend sometime in the water and in the bar enjoying some cold ones

Had something to do with "we're not here to steal from the Iraq government, this is a liberation campaign, therefore spoils of war does not exist." One of my buddies was able to sneek a mortar tube through, no munitions though. I had to buy my AK the same way everybody else does.

Kapla, the Bare drysuit is a piece of garbage and will come apart on you if you try it for barefooting. In fact I think that most retailers warn against using it for barefooting for that reason. I have spoken with Michele and I think she can help you alot with the cost to get you a good barefoot drysuit. Contact here @ 281-395-9751 or 866-576-6408

Kapla,
I don't know anything about the Bare suit, but I do not know any of the footers here that use one. I know guys that have had there suits for 10 years (barefoot international) an have not even had to replace the seams. Get one that is built for barefooting. Look on barefootcentral.com, Lake Elmo Watersports, or Bart's. One of them may have a deal.
I have found the best thing to wear under a dry suit is padded barefoot shorts, a floatation vest (take a old neoprene ski vest and remove the buckles will work). Over those I put on a fleece long sleeve shirt and pants. Use fleece, since it will keep you warm even wet, and yes, you will get some water in.
Also, make sure the suit is large enough to wear all this under. The size chart said I was a large, but with the gear under was WAY tight in the neck and back. I got an XL, which was huge, but when I let all the air out, fit great.
Here is my suit.

I just put the order on a BI suit along with a bi iron short..I got it from Barefoot central...
I have now doubts about the size...I ordered a large (i´m 5.74 feet and weight 176lb)...should I ask for a xl?
The bare was a L and I tryied with my work clothes (jeans and shirt) and fit was loose, and comfy, it was tight on the seal tough (arms, feet and neck..) my head was red like a tomato after some minutes..lol

The BI is a fine suit. You will like it. You may want to check the sizing when you get it; put on all the undergear. You will have it a long time, worth getting the right fit. I found my head getting like a tomatoe as well from the neck seal. I found a small rubber ball I stuff in the hole to stretch it out a few inches the night before I us it. That helps. Dropping 10 lbs. helped too, but the ball was easier...LOL.
I use baby powder to slip on my feet throught the seals. You can use talcum powder too.

Thanks Kapla, I am serious about the winter footing. My first winter I learned to ride the one-foot and front toe-holds. Last winter I strengthened my backward skiing and started in on back one-foots. This summer I will be ready for getting my back one-foots solid, and nailing the back toe-holds.
Summer is great for playing and having fun with warm water/warm air. Winter for me is more focused, more serious due to conditions and less time on the water. Works that way for me.
I am stoked you are getting the suit and getting serious about footing. I love winter barefooting!

Seb, be sure to rinse that suit good, I'm not sure if chlorine is the best on those seals.

Hey Seb,
I'd probably stay away from anything silicone. I believe that it makes it hard to repair or replace seals when the time comes. They sell specific products for zippers and seal savers.

Nice pics Seb. Now pull the neck seal up over your mouth. Breathe in through your nose and exhale through your mouth.
Soon you will be the marshmallow man.
SealSaver(tm) is 100% silicone

i use chap stick on the zipper, easier to get and works just fine. i didn't treat my seals all last winter, damnit and it's june already
use lube to get it off if you have to, preferably binding lube or something that is easy on the latex rubber. dish soap and shaving cream will dry them out

you guys have products for everything....we are more rustic down here..Lol
I use diluted dish soap for my bindings...so I will use the silicone also as lubricant to help taking it out??
Or what else comes to mind?

I spray the silicone from the inside of seals (particularly the ankles) to get them off and it works well. I just keep a spray bottle in my gear bag and it has worked well for me.

I hit a roller with my shoulder. End of day, lack of concentration. As I was catapulted around I braced for pain, but none came.

yeah, lack of focus, too casual, done this a thousand times...bam! Hello, wake up!
The "boom cam" is my invention, although perhaps not the first to do it. I got a waterproof "GoPro Hero" camera for Christmas and was trying to figure out how to best use it. Next time out I will put a little more rope on to get the skier in full view.

I thought about doing that myself too. Costco had them on sale a couple of weeks ago. Instead I'm having mt machinist friend build be a 1 7/8" camara mount to put on the tower boom side.

One thing you will want to consider is the focal length of the camera. That close to the boom, some cameras won't get the whole body it. I have a crude mount I made attached to the center pylon, which is a couple more feet back. If you notice in some of my videos, the camera is static. I use that when there is only 1 skier and 1 driver.

question here
So my brother is interested un buying a drysuit..his is worn and takes some water...He will use it for windsurfing...I guess it will be a fine suit for that sport? Or it will be too bulky? any thoughts?
thanks

Ryan just like those because it makes him look thinner.
Really, depends on what you like, windsurfing isn't going to wear out any suit quickly, so would he rather have something that he can wear regular clothier under for warmth, or a suit that is warm by itself. I like the bag suits so I can change cloths underneath as the temp changes.
