Hello, I have been lurking around here for quite awhile now but haven't posted anything. I just recently picked up an '89 ski nautique and have brought it back to life. When I had it out to test it I noticed that the packing was dripping to much. I have heard nothing but good things about the gto gore-tex packing so I decided to pick some up and change out the old. My question is how many rings do I need to fill the packing nut? I believe that I have read that three rings are needed but am not positive.

I put 3 rings.
Also, a guy I know who's a specialist in those things, told me the best thing to do is to cut the ends of the rings in a 45° angle. That way, the ends are pressed against each other to make the seal even better... ------------- - Gun control means: using BOTH hands! - Money doesn't make one happy, but when it rains cats and dogs, it's still better to cry in a Porsche than on a bicycle... |

For some reason I think thats one of those urban myths. I replace packing on large pumps at work and have tried it at different angles and there was no noticeable result. I cut some just a fraction short and that would produce a result. I think the main thing is to make sure your rope ends are at opposite positions. top , bottom, 1/4's The one's I cut at work at a angle ,,, when I took them back out, the thin end's seemed to be frayed drastically compared to the one's that were cut straight. I'm sure theres some weird science to the art of packing. This is just what I've tried on my on. So I stick to cutting them straight and clean as possible without fraying the ends before you put them in and make the cuts tight as possible when they wrap around the shaft so they butt up really tight.
