I just "changed" my tranny fluid. 89 Supra with a PCM 351 and a power plus 1.23 tranny. 780 hours.

The only pump I had was one of those hand suction pumps. The hose was a little big to fit all the way down, so I added half a quart of tranny fluid, spun the output of tranny a few times, and sucked as much fluid out as I could. I did that 4 times. I really suspected that I was just sucking out the tranny fluid I was putting in, but oh well. Maybe I will do it again in a few weeks.

My question is-- what is the right way to check the fluid level. I was doing this on the trailer, I wondered if it being on the trailer was going to be an issue.

And I assumed that the two lines on the dipstick were a cold line and a hot line. Is that right? My engine was cold, so I was trying to use the cold line. But it was really hard to see where the fluid was on that dipstick. Finally, I just started pulling the dipstick out and immediately putting it against a paper to see how far up it was wet. That was really the only way to have any sort of clue.

So when I was done, I ran the boat for a while. One issue there-- the prop turns in neutral. Now it has always done this-- but is that a problem sign? If I grab the couple I can easily make it stop, but left to its own devices the prop will turn.

Now if I up the RPMs the prop will stop. It was about 1400 rpm. Below that, the prop turned. Above that, it stopped. Any issue there?

to the top line, in the water at op temp....if your in the water and in neutral and your foot gets near the prop, the determining factor is would it hurt real bad or would cut your foot off? at times the packing may be a touch loose, is yours?

Jared,

Sounds like you got the questions answered. My Supra is doing the same thing. The tranny wants to spin even when put in neutral. Dirty neutral, right Eric? From a safety perspective Eric brings up a good point. I notice that if I kick it in reverse, then back to neutral it seems fine.

Eric,

At what point does a person have to do work on the tranny with the dirty neutral situation?

I'm getting ready to change my fluid too and wondering about a way to suck it all out. We'll see how it goes.
