A friend of mine just bought a used 2001 (year) Sport Nautique. He plugged an inflator into his 12v socket and blew a fuse. The entire panel was dead. It took a few minutes, but we finally realized the blown fuse was the one located in-line at the battery in the bow. It was only a 20amp blade fuse. Does anyone know if that is the correct size? It seems very small for a fuse that isolates the entire breaker panel.

20 Amp does sound small if it's the main fuse. I have a 40 for my main fuse.

James,
Sounds like someones been doing some rewiring of the boat when they really don't know what's going on. The main power feed should be coming off the engine harness/main breaker and then at the dash broken down to individual loads. The 20 amp would be typical of the ignition circuit only and the only reason it's that high is due to the inrush load of the start relay (solenoid). That inline fuse at the battery has been added for something! Better have your friend do some investigating before something gets hot!!

I have a 2001 196 and I blew that fuse last year. While removing the stereo to upgrade to a new one I accidently pulled a couple of the wires out of the plug for the head unit and there were some sparks and pops etc.
When I put everything back together there was absolutely no power to the dash, key pad, or switch under the dash. I called White LAke and talked to a service tech and he told me about the fuse link near the battery post. It was a 20A and I have not had any issues since I replaced it so I believe it is correct. There are still circuit breakers on the engine block that are marked 50 A that would control the draw of a starter. I think the inline is strictly for the key pad and dash pod.

Dale,
Taking a look at a wiring diagram may help you understand the basic electrical. Since you're pulling wires and blowing fuses, it may be a goo idea!
The main breaker is there to protect the wiring and even more the alternator. It does not involve the starter. Some starters draw around 200 amps. The 50 wouldn't handle it! The high amperage is why you have those BIG wires going to the starter.

Pete, Thanks for that. I don't usually get into wiring projects without disconnecting the battery but had a small brain fart on that one.
Really didn't expect the wires to pull out of the head unit wiring plug though.
Lessons learned.
