The deluxe interior rear seat in my 88 had an almost rotten seat base. The skin and foam were in really good shape so i was able to remove the staples and get all of the foam and skin off of the old seat base and will be able to re-use the foam and skin on the new seat base that i'm finishing up this week.

I'm anticipating a problem and am hoping some of you guys with upholstery experience can help me wiht this.

The first photo I'm attaching is a pic of the actual boat with seat showing the seat bottom. I've painted a circle around a vinyl seam that runs side to side on the seat base.

My question is:
What keeps the seam in place? That is, there's good foam definition from the flatter foam that covers most of the seat vs. the hump toward the edge of the seat. Is there someway that the seam is tacked/glued into that foam indention? It seems that when I put the skin back on my new seat bottom, that if the skin isn't placed just right, the seam will be pulled up too tight and will not look right.

I'm attaching this second photo as it more clearly shows a seat bottom and the indention/seam I'm referring to.

Any help or solutions are appreciated.

Hi Steve, That second pic is of my boat. I just finished up my interior last week. The cover you are installing should have a flap sewn inside the cover to the seam your speaking of. You install the rear part of the cover over the foam and the staple the flap down then install the front part of the cover. Then staple the bottom. Your seat should be a 2 piece foam.

Ok Dave, So the flap will staple down to the seat bottom? It sounds like you're saying work from the rear of the seat to the front of the seat. Is that right? Does it matter?

Probably does not matter a ton but since he just did one I would follow his advice. Main point is one piece of foam will be out to get the flap or streacher piece and one half properly located and stapled then the othe piece of foam is inserted and the second half secured. You can use a tack hammer and tacks partialy driven(easy to remove)to get the starting placment then staple permanantly working staples from the center of a sides out to the corners

Yes Steve work from the rear forward. Because you want the flap to be even with the back piece of foam. When you pull the flap pull it down so the cover is flush with the foam.
