Guys and gals I'm in the process of repacking the driveshaft and have run into a couple questions. Would I be crazy repacking without pulling the driveshaft? The coupler on this thing is different than I have seen. 6 bolts holding couplers that you cannot remove because of the shape of the coupler thus eliminating the socket trick. There is only one set screw instead of two and the end of the coupler is split with two pinch bolts. I was hoping when I loosened the pinch bolts and set screw it would come out but not having the luck. Any advice would be appreciated! thanks Brian

Brian,
Any reason you want to pull the shaft to repack the gland? It's not needed. If you want to check the surface of the shaft where the packing rides, you can see that by pulling the gland forward.

The split coupling is one of the methods to use on the shaft to avoid the hassle of heat shrinking a solid. They have been around for some time. The newer method is the ARE coupling using a taper at the coupling.

Thanks Pete I will do the repack without pulling the shaft, Im sure it need strut bushings but I dont want it down for long as the gal is insulted if she has to go in the Martini. As far as I can feel there is no packing left in there !

Pete, have you repacked an early 90s vdrive? I cant see what I am doing so Im going brail on this one but it cant be worse than it started! While I have your attention, when I lengthened the driveshaft on the Martini the performance seems to be incredible but when I get over 5500rpm the boat feels loose like Im not sure if its gonna stay straight or circle or flip or whatever? I can only guess it is creating an air pocket for the rudder but I have only drove it slightly after getting used to the caddy(bfoot) if you have any diff ideas please share. thanks again Brian

V drives are not fun to repack or align ether! It's like working on a PWC and like you said "going brail"!!

Hard to say what's going on with your high speed wandering. Your theory about the rudder cavitation is probably not a bad one. I've never lengthened a drive shaft because it's not something I feel is a good practice from the standpoint of radial loading the shaft and the cutlass. It doesn't surprise me you need a new cutlass! Why the longer shaft? Do I remember something about you wanting to run a larger diameter prop?

I was putiing it back to stock length Pete tho it may be a half inch longer max. I had shortened it 2.25" while playing with some 11" and 12" 2 and 3 blades thus the making of the adjustable coupler. I need to get a lil more seat time to tell for sure, maybe its fine just a li scary after driving the fat vdrive. It should be fine to tube with . I have the 540 on it now.
