Hi Folks,
I picked up an 1982 ski tique here in the UK this week for a good price. I've not water tested but runs fine on the trailer and I'd seen it on the water locally before and all seemed well.
Now I'm doing some maintenance on it and last night spotted it has an aftermarket mallory dual point dizzy installed. Now I don't have the part numbers but it has the mesh on the vent and is labelled as "ignition protected" so I'm assuming it's a marine specific unit. The thing is it has a vacuum adv. port on it which is capped off and I can't find a RH 351w dizzy in mallorys part list.
I'll check the part numbers tonight is it has any but has anyone seen a dual point dizzy on a RH engine and/or a vaccum unit with the port capped off?
Seeing as I'm in the UK it's possible someone has just fitted a LH vacuum unit and hoped for the best. I guess without the corrct advance performance will be very flat.
Thanks in advance.
Jay.

Very, very cool boat. Not too many of those late Ski Tiques around. I assume you know that its essentially a 2nd gen Ski Nautique (very closely related to the 80-81 SN's) with a few minor changes? It usually came with a 302 instead of the 351w, and most Ive seen with only 1 speedo. One interesting difference is the "tapered chine" that was first used on the 2001 was added to the 82-84 Ski Tique hull as well- Ive wondered how it affected the wake and handling compared to the 2g hull.
Looks like your boat is mostly original (trailer too, nice!) and wanted to comment. Sorry Im no help with the Mallory.

Yeah it's extremly original for a UK boat. It still has things like original switches, quick release pins for the seats/dog house etc.
Even the trailer is not too bad considering it's been regually dipped in saltwater over the past 3 years.
I'm hoping the wake is similar to the 2001 I used to ride last year (I'm a boarder/skater). Ideally I want to find a 89 2001 but they are few and far between so this will stop gap me till when I find one.

if you hold a flame to the vent and it doesn't pass through then your fine and it should be a marine unit even with the vaccum advance. Also your not going to have an issue with the advance curve because of it not being used. Just check it out with a quality timing light and verify the advance at 1000, 2500, and 3000 rpm and see what it is, then you can change out the springs if needed.

So it should still have a mech advance internally then?
Hope so. Just bought new trailer bearings, cover and a load of other stuff today so I'm a bit skint!

yes all vaccum advance dist have mech advance as well. Now it might not have enough total advance, so verify what it's at now to see if you need to change springs to get a little more advance at higher rpm's

Jayc, years ago I installed a Mallory Marine dual point on my '83 2001, however it was a Chev 350 though. This was done as a cheaper and more reliable replacement for the factory ignition system (this was one of 3 '83 boats built with Mercruiser inboards). Excellant ignition and parts were not a problem back then. I ordered direct from Mallory in Carson City, Nevada. I am curious though, in your photo, is the red plastic cap what you are refering to as the vacuum advance? Capped off? If so, it is not so, that is a mechanical tachomenter drive The red cap protects the coupling when not used.
Cheers,
Mr. Mike.
