Gentlemen,
A good friend of mine failed to winterize his boat this winter. The result is a broken block. The boat had a 4.3 Liter EFI engine with a Mercruiser Outdrive. He is looking at handling the boat repair himself and has a question concerning connection the new engine to the Mercruiser Outdrive. He is looking at purchasing a new short block and moving the bolt on items to the new engine. His manifolds will probably need to be replaced.
I told him to go to Iboats.com and read on the Inboard and Outboard forums for information. He indeed went to Iboats.com and he was left with the impression that connecting a engine to a outdrive required an alignment procedure and special tools. Is either of these concerns true? Does this job require special tools? Is there an alignment that has to be done? If an aligment needed, is it a straight forward process like an inboard?
Any in-site would be greatly appreciated.

Well they say when you install the outdrive's shaft back in you should use an alignment tool. My buddy has used it once, the first time, four other times with out it and no issues for the last couple of years. Pull the outdrive off, remove the two rear bolts and the two motor mount bolts and away you go, it's pretty easy he should be fine. Just leave the wires on the transom and don't try and remove any.

Donald,
This sounds an awful lot like the viagara commercial when the guy looks into the mirror and practices talking to his doctor. It goes something like this. "Dr. I have this friend who....."
You sure this is a "friends" boat?
I have no idea about outdrive alignment by the way

used one yesterday and the drive was out of alignment .....had to adjust, it will load the gimble bearing. but like 79 said, you could slide that tool in 10 engines and they will be dead on....its always the 11th one that isnt. make sure your buddy gets the identical year engine or there will be problems. and the reason you need the tool on this one is because you are removing the mounts and re-installing on a new engine. it is straight forward, slide it in with with your thumb and index finger and it shouldnt hang up, if you have to grasp the to tool with a full fist to remove you need to adjust...oh yeah, if out of align it will take out the coupling tooooooooooo.......

one other misconception is, the gimble bearing is a spherical bearing which means the inner race will angle or move non parrallel to the outer race so you have to use the tool to move it to get it to line up

Chris and Eric,
I was hoping to here from you guys. Thanks for the help.
Steve,
I also have a friend who pulls tubes on Lake Murray with a COMPETITION SKI BOAT, but I do not talk about it out in the open. Just maybe his two lovely daughters will get a tubing scholarship at a major college. I can only handle one friend's proplem at a time. Once we get this stern drive engine replaced, I will help the other guy deflate that tube. LOL !!!!!!
Also, no ED drugs needed with me either. LOL !!!!!!
Thanks again,
Donald
