Subject: oil on top of the intake manifold

small amounts of oil are pooling on the top of my intake manifold. Mostly towards the rear of engine a 1980 351 commander. I"v changed the valve cover gaskets and the valve covers are stock and nearly straingt where the bolts secure. Am I missing somthing here boys? Thanks

| Gordonw, do you have an oil drain kit on your commander? Is the hose pulled up and resting on your manifold? Mine is, and it leaks a tad bit, creating a small pool on the top of my manifold. Hope it's something this simple. |

| Yes mine has one but it's tied up around the impeller intake hose. The intake manifold gasket has been replaced and the problem existed before that also. Maybe it's somthing else simple? It must be the valve covers. |

I noticed the same problem on my '84 Commander engine. My idle was running high so I replaced the carb/spacer and spacer/intake gaskets. The oily puddle went away. Not to mention the engine idled a lot better. Is your idle running high?

| Not really. I do have the iddle screw turned out all the way though. I have new spacer gaskets, fuel lines, clamps and so on. This motor has always done this and now I'm really stumped. I can clean it off and then the same amount of oil is back with in an hour. But after that it never really grows. Thanks. |

| My theory is that the crankcase ventilation hose is depositing oil on the spark arrestor and some of this oil eventually seeps down the arrestor and carb and settles on the intake manifold. |

Check the gasket of the raw water pump. at high rpm's or wot the h20 pressure is high and the pump can have a tendancy to spray through an old gasket. I have my lid cranked down as tight as I can and it still sprays. the liquid on the intake manifold could be a mix of oil/gas from the carbureator gaskets and water from the pump. open your engine cover and put the throttle at 4000. you might be surprised. my 83 commander does this as well.

| You guys are right on. Thanks for all the help. Took it out the other day for a test run. I think it's the crank case ventilator. I torked it all down including the valve covers and havn't seen any oil. So I'm calling it good. |
