Lots of talk last week an GL about the Clinton Fall weekend so thought I'd get the ball rolling.

We seem to have 2 weekends that could work so I'll throw out dates as Sept-11/12 or Sept-18/19.

Kick it around and we'll start a preference list next week.

Alan, it's really too early to tell with the kids' sports activities, but I would have to vote for Sept-11/12 at this point. I also heard ALL Clinton Lake campsites are now reservable. I don't know if it true or not, as I have not looked into it. We've only been there once so far this summer.

I checked the http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/parks/R3/clinton.htm#Camping - Illinois DNR Clinton Lake site

Reservations will be accepted using the Reserve America website starting July 7th, 2010.

Once a date in finalized, we should inquire as to whether a block of sites can be held.

Looking at the website the lake looks awesome. Are there tons of houses on the lake or is most of it public land? Depending on which weekend Lisa and I will be there.

Paul, There's no development on the lake at all, I believe all the land is owned by the power company. The campground is state run and has nice facilities, beach, boat ramp, general store and a lunch/breakfast joint.   There is a marina with gas as well but thats about it. This is always a great weekend for the CC gang, do try to make it out. Water temp in sept by the outlet is still in the 90's, after a day playing hard on the water we just tie up, float and relax until we run out of beer.

Gary, There is a new motel about 25 minutes from the campground, I'll look it up and post info on it tonight. Skutch and his gang stayed there last year and I didn't hear anything bad about it.

This is a great weekend everybody and for many the last one of the year so worth the trip.

This is a super-duper trip. I may not have our boat back from the great northwoods by that time, or at all if I find storage up there. If that's the case I may be boatless.

We can do the 11th. I have a bachelor party in Miami the 18th. Poor me. I won't be able to make it down until Friday evening after work. I have one other problem, if we are going to camp I will have to bring the 5th wheel. I can trade a bed in the 5th wheel for a spot in a boat unless someone is available to tow the boat from Chicago.

Yeah, I missed this gathering three years in a row now. I'd love to come down.. Clinton is great..

Does anyone know if there's a camper place around that would drop off a rig like they do up in Green Lake??

Anyway, hope the dates work out.... Again I'm in for the 18th..

In talking to the Clinton regulars off-line it seems that 9-18 would be the better weekend for most.

Unless there are other objections I think we should call it for Sept 17-19. We usually get in Thursday evening after work and plan to do that again this year. I'd also suggest the same camping loop as last year, I just reserved site A44 and sites 41 through 49 are all available. These sites are a short walk down the hill to the lake and docks and worked out pretty good last year. Here's the link to http://www.reserveamerica.com/camping/map_of_Clinton_Lake_State_Recreation_Area/r/campgroundMap.do?camparea=792980&contractCode=IL&parkId=451791 - reserve your site . Grab your site now so were all together like last year.

I know there will be some who just can't make that weekend but if it's any consolation Dana and I will be there 9-11 as well so you'd still have the opportunity to check the place out.

To everyone interested in renting a camper, I finally found a place in Mattoon, IL who does that. The name of the place is Happy Trails and the phone number is 217-345-2009. There is a $250.00 setup and delivery charge due to the distance traveled. The guy was very helpful and had many makes and models to choose from. He was able to make recommendations based on how many are in the party. Sleeping accomodation can be important.

www.happytrailsrvrental.com is the website I used. There are more RV's available than what is on the website.

It is a bit pricy, but hanging out at the campground is 80% of the fun! If it rains, at least you won't be cooped up in a motel room 30 miles away. They have 3 day/ 2 night rentals which is ideal for this weekend.

Just letting everyone know. I will look in the Bloomington area my next chance, but this is the only one I have heard of so far that rents.

Good luck!

Todd

Todd,

We'll try and make it in Aug. I think the last two weeks of Aug free. Lisa and I just put our 5th wheel on a private lake outside of Wilimington, IL. It is awesome. You will have to come join us for a weekend. Anyone is welcome to join us. There is room on our lot for an extra camper and my boat is there so we are good to go. Water is crystal clear and it has a course and jump ramp, although my thoughts are if you are over 30 the ramp is a terrible idea.

Just thought I might point out something on Lake Clinton. This lake is warm all year round because of the Nuclear Plant. This is like a tropical enviorment. Do you think that there may be some tropical fish with large teeth in that lake. I am just saying. Food for thought, but on the other hand it's not the length of life that is important but the quality.

Some stupid fisherman a few years ago tried saying he caught a piranah in the lake. Some of the locals knew who he was and figured he was just trying to create a news story. It made the news and yes, he looks stupid. Anybody who knows anything about fish....especially those...know they can't survive an Illinois winter even in the warm water discharge.

I wouldn't worry about it Paul. I have swam in that water for years and most people say I am normal. Remember...I said most.

We may have to make a trip up to your lake and check it out sometime. Sounds like a great little secret up there!

I know Paul. If it weren't for my lovely wife looking over my shoulder shaking her head, the reply would have been even more colorful!

Your comment was about as funny as Randyinohio's question about bears in GL. It is always good for a laugh! Believe me, when you come down and have had a full day of skiing and drinkin', you will love the "hot tub" next to the campground. Quite relaxing!

I am not saying that there are not big fish in that area...so watch the skinny dippin' man!

Mike,
Lake Clinton, Illinois is about 6 hours south of you. You may be mistaken that with Clinton, IA just to the south.

I'm not totally sure on my kids' schedules yet, fall and spring get pretty busy with soccer and cheer, and their schedules don't come out until late august. I would love to be able to make it though.

Not sure that we are going to be able to make it that weekend. It is our town's fall festival/carnival then and the kids wouldn't let me live it down if I made them miss it. Best chance we might try to make it on Sunday. We've been out quite a bit this year, but only made it Clinton 1 time.

Joel, Will sure be good to get to ski with you and Beth at least once this year. Lots of people we still haven't seen all summer and it's coming to a pretty quick close.

Since we'll be on-site this year, that means early morning runs. And that means slalom course deployment, which of course means fun.

I hope Gary and crew can show up, the one time I heard from Gary this year he sent me an awesome set of bindings that matched my new wakeboard perfectly and would except nothing in return but to buy him a drink or two at GL.. I didnt even get a chance to do that...

As August draws to a close and fall creeps onto the distant horizon it is that time of year where I start to plan my annual unoffical last season ccfan ski trips, this one has never quite worked out in the past but this year I booked it first to make sure there were no conflicts. I am definitely looking forward to a second shot for some midwest ccfan comradire in summer 2010, GL never quite yields enough time to both chill and ski.

Just found out that we don't have anything planned for that weekend, yet. I will see if I can talk the wifey into going down there that weekend. Maybe drive down Friday night and head back home Saturday night. Can't miss the Bears' game on Sunday.

I emailed back and forth with Gary a few days ago. He said he'd be out to party with us if Helden didn't have anything related to hockey going on then...

Joe, right on, glad to see you coming out.

How many boats/people do we have coming down?

Looks like it's shaping up to be another great weekend. The lake has been great skiing early am and just after dinner but as usual it will calm down after labor day.

This weekend we took a side trip to Liquid Edge to get Dana some pointers. They are awesome people and Dana's 30 minute lesson stretched to close to an hour, Doug is a great instructor. They dropped an X-14 in the water just for her to better match the wake Dana's used to boarding behind, it was navy blue and orange so I commented on the Illini colors and it turns out it was Coach Zooks personnal boat.

Then back at he lake in the afternoon we got treated to a wildman buzzing party cove in a small plane. He buzzed us for about 15 minutes doing most of the manuevers you see at an air show. He made a pass about a 1/2 mile long no more than 20 feet above the lake then climbed enough to miss the house boat raft uo by again no more than 20 feet. He was below the tree tops, amazing flying. Tough to catch him on a camera phone but here's one that we got.

The Holiday Inn Express!! You'll be running 32 off @ 36 mph, doing inverts on the wakeboard, and probably have the fastest boat there Gary. It pays to stay at the Holiday Inn Express

I should get there Friday mid-late PM sometime as I have to work in the morning. We are camping. One son will be coming up from Eastern IL in Charleston, and hopefully my oldest son will be coming over to join the fun from IU in Bloomington IN. I just bought him a new Radar P6 a week or so ago, so he needs to break it in right.

Any recommendations for a person wanting to check out the boats, but doesnt have a boat of their own? I was thinking of making the trip down from Naperville, but I am not sure where to go/what to do once I get there.

Just trying to do a little research into what CC is right for me, and what better place than an event that has a bunch of different models/years.

The lake is not that big you can get a pretty good look at the boats from shore.

Change your email setting from private to public so you can exchange a few phone numbers to keep you from getting stranded at the ramp if everyone is out on the water.

Matt

I'm sure there will be a nice selection of CCs to check out come on down and I will make sure you get out on the water. Most of us will be in the state campground loop A.

Yes, pretty much every type model will be there. Not new of course, but you'd get the idea. Make sure you come down to the campground's ramp and loop A and we'll make sure you get to check the "ONLY" boat make you should buy !!!
