have a friend that just bought a 2001 air nautique vdrive.
Was asking me about the packing for the drive shaft. I don't have a clue about Vdrives, never even raised the hood to look at one.

I'm sure the packing gland is the same as a DD.   I've heard ya'll say that it was a blind thing you had to feel for.

Can you remove enough stuff to get to it with good sight or is it a blind thing no matter what you remove ?

Any tips appreciated.     If I can get to the nut I'd have no problem doing it.   Just wondered how much of a "B" it is before I dive in.

What size packing rope ?   How many rings ? Is it the same size nut as a DD shaft ?   Estimated time if you half As know what your doing.

I've never tried to get at the shaft packing. I have removed the back seat, and the center floor panel, and you can get pretty good access. Again, I didn't try to reach my arms around in there, so my perception may not be reality. BKH

I will have the displeasure of attempting this on my friends 99SAN this fall. He has been unable to get the locking nut loose himself. We believe it will be a double blind job, one lefty, and one righty. Not excited. It is going to be a total bitch to do, but....

Has your friend determined that he has a problem with his? Hopefully it can just be tightened a bit.

I already mentioned that it may just need a tightening,,,,, But hell if you break the lock nut loose your only 10 min's away of having new packing in.    And I could imagine that being a 2001 model its probably already been snugged up once and still has the original packing.

But I did tell him it could possibly be the rudder also.

I hate to even ask about what you have to remove for that on a vdrive.   I'll have to get over there this weekend and start probeing around to see what it looks like.    He just got the boat a month ago.
