I wired my float switch for automatic use on the bilge pump. This weekend the switch crapped out on me. Has anyone had similar problems? Any recommendations? Are level switches only for use when the boat is stationary?

Basically, yes.

Best to wire the switch so that you can bypass it with a switch on the dash. This way, you can operate the pump anytime you wish, regardless of the float switch.

The float switch is benefical when leaving the boat in the water unattended for long periods of time.

The best float switches are smart switches that have a built in delay of 30 seconds or so...this eliminates the movement of the boat from activating the pump if the float switch is activated while using the boat.
