Roger, I may still have a 256 Y block with a Velvet Drive. I've been trying to move it for a year and finally dropped it off at a shop where I was going to trade it for work on another project. It is all there except for the exhaust manifolds and I'm told you can buy those new for a Y block. It had the originals, but I removed them for spares, although after I got them off, I found hair line cracks in them. Anyway, its a 135 hp Interceptor, (1 sidedraft carb). I believe it runs. email me through the site and give me your email address if you'd like to talk further. The guy I'm dealing with would be just as happy to see it used rather than part it out.

Hi Bruce thanks for the offer I would realy like the 292 or 312 if I can don't know much about old Y blocks and there power outputs but do like the idea of a Velvet drive instead of a Dearbourn.

Roger, I sent you an email. Having 2 Dearbos that work very well, I can tell you a Velvet Drive is still a better tranny. Interestingly, I've been finding that the guys restoring nice old boats would much rather have the Dearbos if that's what was original. I don't know what happened to Pete on that one as he put a VD in his Dunphy.

I didn't put the Velvet in it. It came that way!!!

The early (late 50's) versions (A&B) of the Dearbo's were problematic with external (B) or double stacked oil pumps (A) delivering the needed hydraulic pressure to the trans clutch pack. It was the early 60's when they went to the self contained oil pump in the trans itself when they became real reliable. The extra torque of the 312 through the dearbo was the final problem. When new they were great but with a little wear they weren't.
What are you putting this Y block in?

Pete, I've been told if people would have just changed the fluid in them they wouldn't have had any problems. After talking with a few collectors I'm finding there's a cult-like following for Deabos out there.

Pete I have agreed to buy a very poor wood CC and ship over it will be a total strip back and start over most will be new but need it as a patton,having seen yours its the only way I could hope to have wood CC in the UK as the cost is low ish so our import tax @ 17.5% its not so bad just need to get it here by the end of the year as it going up to 20% and it will be great for my OCD.
I'm trying to keep it original of the time with a V8 my guess is it can have a Y block or a gray marine V8 in 58 so if I can find an engine and drive I can ship it to the boat and put in the container.
I have a heap of mahogany left over from a job here that looks CC bound.

Roger! You actually have something besides MDF in your shop?
Keep me/us informed on the project.
Yes, a Gray 327 (AMC) would be a good choice as well. They were available with the dual YH carbs in the valley making it a low profile. Find a later flywheel aft version if you go looking. All the marinized flwheel forwards have a tendency to snap cranks due to power being taken off at the PTO end.

Monty yes it is a Correct Craft, had some great help from the guy selling it and feel he has told it as it is regarding the shape its in as its not for the faint hearted this one.

UK, there are a few to be found here, but the pickings are getting slim. I have seen a few that were not worthy to bring home, power plants seem to be a little easier to find.
The 1957 Collegian was a rare find, all the important stuff is there. 312 Intercepter w/dearborn A tranny.A good clean of the carbs resulted in a running motor,possibly R&R the heads, to refresh.
Very little wood damage, looks like strip , seal and revarnish will complete the exterior.Bilge clean and scrub w/ new paint will have the interior looking good.
I will start a new thread w/ pics to show before and during and hopefully the finish in time for SJRR in late March.........Boat dr
