Just curious. Hope this doesn't get me kicked off the site. Have to do something on those breezy days.

My other boat:

Any other sailors out there? I'm in CC withdrawal the next two weekends as we are off at sailing regattas.

I grew up water skiing but over the past 20 years it's been nothing but sail. I bought a SN and had a bit of fun with it for a summer, but my family really seems to prefer the tippy boats. We live on the ocean so it's kind of a no brainer that most of our time will be spent under sail. We have a Catalina 34 that we cruise and I race in a couple of local one design fleets. It's crazy how exciting racing can be. It's a pretty unique rush.

Anyway, what ever gets you out on the water is what I believe in! We sold the SN (check out the "86 SN Rebuild" thread in the boat maintanence forum). But hopefully we'll catch a couple rides in the summer with some friends so my kids can learn to ski.

you guys need to spend an afternoon at the Edgewater yacht club, 95% blow boats.....how bout why blow when you can get pushed, more to come lol
I did find myself reading an article about a 110 ft blow boat, they were re-planking, the re-fit on the boat was 3 times the cost of buying new, a woman owned the boat, good article

The CC bug did bite followed by the Woody wants...
I still own 4 Hobies w/ enough parts to build 2 more..
2 18 magnums, one for play / one full race mode w/ spinnaker
1 sport 17
1 Hobie 16

I have raced most of the regattas from Brownville Texas to the Florida Keys over the past 20 years.I was never a AA class sailor, but could trophy on any given course.Much prefer bouys to distance, nothing compares to the head rush with 30 boats on a start line at 30 seconds till the HORN...
Same type of people as the CCFans , just different motors.

No leaners in my stall

Long, long ago we would watch the boats go under the Mackinac Bridge, in the Chicago to Mackinac sail boat race. I've been sailing a couple of times, don't need to do it again.

I started sailing when I was about 8, and raced sunfish and lasers for awhile, then got into some near coastal cruising and such, now I'm an ASA certified instructor.. but honestly nothing does it for me like the smell of raw big block exhaust on the water..

BTW 76tique, Do you sail out of Nyack? I know a few members at the Nyack boat club and have serviced a few boats from there..

Interesting to see some of the most active CCF'ers are sailors !
Definitely the same kind of crowd into watersports and sailing, we don't mind getting our hands dirty and love messing around with boats. There's nothing like the sound of a V-8 in the morning though!!

JJ - Yep, it's a thistle, hull 1485, built 1963 by Schock restored 2005 by us. My wife and I have been very active in the class for the last 15 years. Super cool people and great times. Bummer you had to give up the SN but looks like she's in very good hands! I hear you on the family not being into it - I can't seem to get my wife into skiing yet. Unfortunately she injured herself this summer on the boat - not helping!

Eric - good to hear from a diehard CCF'er! BTW I have sailed several regattas out of EYC, also cruised the flats about 10 years ago on a big Searay out of there. Nice club.

Billy - cat racing is one aspect of the sport I haven't had the chance to try yet. I bet it is a blast. I have done distance, Newport to Bermuda twice and the Fastnet were the bigger races. I much prefer small boats around the bouys. Great rush on the starting line! The below pic on the wall of the St. Pete YC bar was 70 boats. That was a blast!

Matt - yes, we are members at NBC. Have been here for the past 2 years. Good to hear from someone else in the area! Where do you ski?

just giving you a hard time about the blow boats, in the Duldrums they need to fire auxillary power or to get back to the dock, been on many BB's repowering or fixing the transmissions. now the submarine guys, we know 100 men go down and 50 couples come up

Tom,
I ski on Greenwood Lake, on the NY/NJ border.. Nice ski lake, not so great for sailing but there are quite a few sail boats on the lake.. Where do you ski?

I windsurf occasionally..I grew up saling (optimist, laser, sunfish, you name it) my father used to own a 37" sail boat..nice boat, but unfortunally due to an electric failure in the engine..it burned out...bad thing my dad and some friends were on board..they had to jump out..no one got hurt only small burns...
After that no more boats for my dad...

I owned a blow boat store for 10 years specializing in Sunfish Laser Hobie Cat and Precision with a few lesser known brands also. Race locally on occasion and sponsored a Hobie clinic and race for a few years. I raced a Nacra 5.8, Hobie 21,and 18 SX, but the most fun was a Sunfish on a very windy day. Set up correctly those boats could haul. I also ran a DN on the ice for a few years.

NIIICE Thistle! I owned #3324 for many years. I am on the other end of the spectrum and I have just joined the stinkpot crowd recently. I have grown up sailing-mostly racing on everything from Lasers to GL70s. I currently own too many sailboats--Star, Hobie 16, Hobie 18 Magnum, A couple of Optis for the kids and a Flying Scot that I have just recored and am preparing to sell. I also have a DN.
I tried to take the H-18 out tonight but it did not go as I had hoped. Mid 80's here in SW Michigan. Not too many of those days left!

WOFTAM, Go Hobie 18M, We have raced regattas from South Padre Texas to the Steeple Chase in the Florida Keys . With stops at most every yacht club on the Gulf Coast. That insanity lasted about 22 years or till I turned 55 years old.
Still do it, just more play sailing.. I have two 18's come lets play..............Billy

Boring day at work, so going through old threads. Grew up sailing the Sunfish's, Snarks, etc. Couple years ago bought an early 70's Hobie 16 to teach the girls to sail (I'm a big proponent of teaching them what I call "life skills"). Very fun when the winds kick up the water to much to ski and much better then breaking out the tubes! Problem is I have no idea if I have it rigged correctly, but man its fun when you get it up on one hull, it vibrates and whistles and hums, reminds me of flying a Piper cub with the window open. Billy or JoeInNY, next time you get up to Green Lake, I may have to steal you away for some lessons
