Anyone know of a larger oil filter for a PCM 351? I use bigger filters on some of my other vehicles to get the extra capacity (and sometimes better filtration).

Im not sure that Ive seen a bigger oil filter than the Motorcraft FL1A or Wix 51515. If I fit it on my truck, Id use it!

Id stick with the proven filters.

Tom,
I agree with Tim. Stick with the proven filters (except a Fram!!)

Unless you are going 4 or 5 times beyond the recommended oil change interval of 50 hours, the standard filter has plenty of capacity. You will NOT get better filtration with a larger filter - just more capacity.

How often are you doing a oil/filter change?

Who told you a bigger filter does a better job? Advertising? FYI, a half plugged filter cleans down to a smaller micron size!

On the boat, annually. (I don't do a ton of hours) We don't want to get sidetracked on extended oil change intervals for vehicles here do we? :) I'll just say that I was experimenting with some extended intervals but synthetic has gotten so much cheaper I'm not doing much more than what I was with conventional. I do like that little bit of extra capacity ... probably not a measurable different but psychologically I tell myself the oil is a little cooler. :)
btw - Wix does make a bigger filter w/ the same thread / gasket specs.. didn't use it on my other vehicles b/c of the micron rating. It's a 51773 (Motorcraft FL299) if you want to take a peek:

Yeah, I don't think there really is an easily available oversized filter for these motors. Even if there is, it's pointless unless you run synthetic, and even then, putting more than 50 hours on in a season is tough for most folks up north with our short season.

When I had my 4.0 I6 jeep, I used the same filters that I use on my nautique, and those were the same as on my 2 different 5.0 mustangs.

The original spec'ed filter for the 4.0 jeep was simply a shorter version of the Fl1A sized filter. For me now, the boat is the only vehicle that uses that size filter. 4 different vehicles, 4 different filters. ugh...

Haha! That's what I have - three Jeep I6s, one 5.0 Ford, and the boat. Five engines, same filters!

My parent's 4.7 v8 grand cherokee can fit the FL1a type filter too. At one point, we had like 7 vehicles from 2 different manufacturers , not including the 351w boat as a different manufacturer, running the same filter. That made buying filter easier than it does now.

So Tom, does it now mean you go to buy filters 4 times instead of once? I don't get it! Maybe writing down the filter numbers and then getting all of them in one trip would be smart??

No Pete, I make 4 different trips for my filters.



In the past, writing it down wasn't necessary, but now it is:)

Don't worry about having to write down the numbers. It will only get worse! I've had a list of filter numbers for years but now the problem is I can't remember where the list is!!

Speaking of filters, has anyone else run into these filters leaving their gasket behind? No big deal because it's so easy to see but just weird.

I've worked in entry level auto repair jobs and have done hundreds of oil changes. I remember being warned about "double gasketing" but it rarely, if ever, actually happened. I want to say less than 1% of the time.

I changed my boat's oil once when I got it in the spring, once mid season, and once before storage. The old filter left it's gasket on the engine all three times! I forget the brand that came with the boat, but of the second two, one was a Wix and one was a PCM, so at least 2 different brands did it.

Perhaps they cranked it on dry? I've never had one stick.

I've only ever heard of one stick on the motor once. That was at my friends oil change shop. And yes, it leaked BADLY when double gasketed. It never left the parking lot of the shop. Granted, I didn't see it happen, but I saw the oil stain just past the building.

I had it happen once a long time ago and I cannot recall the brand of filter and I have never put them on dry. I had never considered it as a possibility and the filter mount was up and out of sight on the back of the block. I didn't notice it until I ran it and saw oil spraying everywhere. Talk about a WTF! moment. One of those "never again" mistakes.

That FL-299 was the filter used on the old Ford F-600 thru F-800 gas motored trucks. It had a lot of extra capacity for the severe duty use expected on those vehicles. You can always go to the Ford Racing FL-1A which is their ultimate filter. It's really built for the high performance engine in mind. The heavy gauge of the filter makes it weigh about twice as much as a standard one. If your engine is stock you can't go wrong with the Motorcraft FL-1A that the engines came with from Ford.

PAPA stole my thunder,i used to run the fl-299 on my trucks to get extra capacity.they still make them,verified this morning.
