Hey guys, I need advice on my stuffing box. I have a 1991 Nautique Excel with 454 and V-drive. Apparently the gland nut and locking nut on the stuffing box backed off and it looks like the gland nut ground up against the steel safety collar. This spun the gland nut against the locking nut (which was still partially on the box) and it looks like it removed some metal there. Regardless of what happened the locking nut will not screw back down on the box without excessive torque and thus I cant put the gland nut on at all.
My feeling is that the stuffing box or nut is toast and needs replacing so any advice on where to find a new box and how to pull the prop shaft so I can replace it?

Thanks

okay, so I need to pull the shaft, and Ive been getting info that says I need to disconnect the shaft flange from the tranny then pull the flange and others say I can just disconnect the shaft from the shaft flange.
Which one do I do?

I need to pull the shaft on my 91 as well. I assume you have the 1.125 diameter shaft? I am thinking of building a slide hammer to attach to the end of the drive shaft and leaving the coupler bolted together. Lets see what anyone else has to say but these boats are a little rare on this site. If I build the slide and it works I would be happy to share

Brian,
A slide hammer? You must want to keep Eric busy this winter!!

Not given,
I'd be giving some thought about pulling the engine. It's not fun working down there on a V drive. With the engine out, you can then also pull the shaft forward. I feel it would be easier.

Brian,
Getting back to your slide hammer idea, others have thought about it and used them too. You need to read Eric's posts more. He's mentioned several times about getting trans's with the tail end broken off!!

slide hammers in small doses are OK, "for pulling dents". at times, my 3 jaw puller cant get the coupling off and sure as sht a dent puller is not going to get them off.   the best way in a situation like this with the trans still in the boat is spacers between the two halves and all thread to pull the coupling off. you MUST get the set screws out without breaking them, if not you minus well cut the shaft.
I think I posted this summer down in the marina, the guys cut a 5" or 6" shaft out of a Tiarra....they had no idea you could put spacers between the 2 and pull the half off..the trans was still installed on the boat and it seems like they took the easy way out. I have no idea how they cut the shaft, but they did

Eric, would like to see pictures of the process of using a three jaw puller to relive a shaft from its coupler in a older CC V-drive.

Inboard boat shops have used slide hammers for many many years to pull shafts from couplers while the motor/trans is still in the boat. We utilized Slide hammers at the factory when needed. The key is plenty of lubrication and making sure any set bolts are out also knowing when to stop if the shaft does not freely come out. Out side of salt water usage I have never had a problem utilizig a slide hammer for pulling shafts. We do somewhere around 5-10 a year.

If memory serves me correctly, the driveshaft in this particular setup is not a press fit as the coupler uses bolts to pinch the coupler to the shaft. Also you will be pulling on the walters not the borg. If you can use the socket trick thats great but for some reason when I repacked this didnt seem like an option in this setup but I cant remember why

okay so I separated the shaft flange from the Vdrive flange but after 5 hours of trying to pull the flange off the shaft, Ive had no luck. I tried using a prop puller with no success also. I don't have a slide hammer. Should I try the socket/long bolt force out method? or does someone have a better idea.

Thanks,
Kurtis

The walters coupler does have pinch bolts and must be loosened before trying to pull the shaft. This process should really be done by some one that has performed the removal of a shaft before. Socket long bolt method?? sounds like a great way to ruin both the output coupler flange and the shaft coupler flange.
I built my slide hammer out of home depo hardware and a solid steel 4"X6" round bar stock drop from a welding shop, Though I do have access to a metal lathe to bore the round stock and turn the slide down and make it cool!!

anyone tried a flange puller?

Jodi, you and I both know what can and cant be done with a slide hammer.......give a kid a gun............
but good catch on the Walter's they are pinch bolts and much easier to remove than the normal coupling
BTW, i can provide evidence of a 1.23 with the back end blown off from a slide hammer lol, but on my side of the argument im use to pulling couplings at times on 8" shafts either hydraulically or mechanically by a puller..no way a slide hammer will work on that and over the years i got use to this method via a 1" shaft or a 8" shaft,
to me its the same as slide hammering an harmonic balancer off an engine, which i wouldnt do, and most would say if you did you would cause unseen damage, I guess this one we'll leave up in the air
