Why would that tranny be better than a Velvet Drive?

because if i buy it for 500.00 I'll sell it for 900.00 lol,
I dont think it was implied that it was better. apples to apples, go with a Borg Warner if possible

The PCM in a true Direct drive application will do just as nicely as any Velvet Drive 71-C, Now if we are talking 72-C then ya! more robust then even the PCM or The 71. I see more problems with the 71 then the PCM.

when you have a ratio of 100:1 of course you are going to see more BW's but, if you condense those numbers,
basically, the PCM is a throw away tranny...most times, chepaer to buy new than to have rebuilt, the BW is a proven workhorse
but, respectively, keep the PCM lined up and the water out and it too will be sufficient for any application up to 475 horsies...put her in the BFN and give the sister your trans????

If and when her PCM ever fails, she can always rebuild her original 71C!
I think Ill be keeping the BFN tranny... its a 72C in front of the big block. Im not sure we'd be under that 475hp cap anyways!

Eric dont know how you come up with the 100:1 ratio because in the ski boat world the Borg has been religated to near nothing over the last 20 years. PCM utilizes their 123 and the 1:1 both are virtually the same accept for the gear set on the back of the reduction gear. Indmar utilizes the Hurth series , Talk about throw away transmissions! We have seen real good service out of the PCM/ZF gear. It was not until the wakeboard world decided to really over weight their crafts that we started seeing higher failure rates and again that was addressed with a bigger sump in the casting. I like the Borg too because it is easily re-built and can be done with a pair of plyers (Not Really But you know What I meen)The PCM and Bigger Hurth stuff requires more tools and more expensive replacement parts for rebuild. I would have to say in my business here in the south I replace or repair more Borgs over PCM's 5:1, then again the Borgs I see are in 20 plus year old boats. You can say they were the work horse 20 plus years ago but in today's inboard world PCM and Hurth rule the inboard watersports production.

between the big 3 thru the 60's 70's and 80's, I would say there are thousands out there, of course the bigger ones require more tools and that means the average Joe keeps his hands out of the fruit basket, 90% of the time when i get a PCM in it is non serviceable because of the damage, about 2% of the time when i get a BW in they are serviceable...that says alot, and i would say the average life span of a properly maintained Borgski is about 25 years,
I guess its to each his own, I just look at it from a different angle and to me the PCM is Kia and the BW is a hummer
