| could anyone help me verify sachs driveplate plate# for 86 SN 351,B/W VELVET DRIVE.i have seen it posted in past and wrote it down,part#80106,availible through MER equipment.i called to order it and they question wether it will be strong enough.i know Eric uses them.thanks for the help |

Mer changed their web site all around and it seems the nice pictures/descriptions of the Sach's plates are gone. I've used several of the Sach's plates but of course didn't save the part numbers!!! The key is the number of splines that matches the Velvet. Then, the plates were "universal" with about 7 different hole patterns to bolt up to whatever flywheel. as always thank you for the quick reply  .are these plates made by sachs?i see no mention of manufacturer.it looks like i will be digging out about 4 ft of snow to see what size flywheel i have.thanks again

I didnt see anyone follow up, so I wanted to chime in and confirm what we all suspected (or knew but didnt explicitly say). The ALTA-106 damper available at ebasic power is in fact made by Sachs, though it is not called out on their website. Or maybe it is made by Alta with Sachs parts? Whatever- its the high quality damper Eric is always mentioning. Quite the deal for $60.

So I assume this fits all Ford flywheels? If it does not you have to cut it down to the smaller size or shell out 30 bucks more and get the "a" ? With the 7 different hole patterns/centers, it's supposed to fit any flywheel with a B/W trans. (the number of spines matches the Velvet} The last one I put on the Tique and I did have to cut it down. I scribed the diameter, cut it on the band saw and then finished it off on the disk sander. | thanks for the reply tim.i tried to purchase from ebasic and they were A-HOLES.dealt with 2 different people,would not take my order over phone and told me my computer was broken???long story but bottom line was i knew what i wanted and they made it rediculous.i gave up and bought the overpriced skidim unit out of frustration. |

| not to hijack but I assume this will fit my 85' 2001, 351 velvet drive ? and my transmission works fine but I think it is all original should I replace the damper for preventive maintenance ? |

Is your engine or transmission already out of the boat? If so, swap the damper- its good preventative maintenance. Thats what we're doing on our BFN. If the powertrain is in the boat and you have no real need to pull it, Id be inclined to leave it be until it starts to act up. Having the plate on hand in case your original lets go isnt the worst idea in the world though- that way you can be back on the water quickly should it fail. ------------- |

for reading purposes, when changing the damper, when at all possible, leave it finger tight and install the transmission to the engine and then come back in and tighten the bolts...this method will center the damper on the flywheel. ------------- "the things you own will start to own you" |

| i changed mine because i was rebuilding the trans.upon inspection i found it to be completely rotted around the springs and they were all exposed.the factory plate has them enclosed. |

I had the same issue on my '74 and ended up buying the trimmed down Sachs (ALTDA-106A) from Basic Power for $90, but I was pressed for time. Also, you'll find that only 3 of the 6 bolts used on the factory damper will match up on the flywheel with the Sachs.
Is this your experience as well Eric? |

The trimmed down version has less holes but you only use 3 bolts.

You only use 3 bolts regardless of whether its the cut down version or not, right Pete? I recall you saying that is just fine... only 3 bolts line up on our BFN/72C, whereas the original (round) damper took 6. ------------- |

What would be the benefit of a cut down version?

It's a "fits all" engines (with a Velvet) plate so it's diameter is large enough to accommodate all 7 hole patterns of any flywheel. The Fords flywheel are smaller and that's why the trimming is needed.
