Well, our new CEO must not like driving in bad winter conditions. He's shutting down the plant today after first shift and then starting up again on Thursday morning. This is the first time we've ever shut down due to snow. I've got to ask him if he used to live down in Florida with John as a neighbor!!

The snow amounts aren't that much but the wind is what may create the problems.

Better to have snow than the 2" of ice we're supposed to get here....
Enjoy the day off.

Same here Pete, I forward our calls to the home phone and we can all log on to our office network from home so it look's like we'll be working from the kitchen table wednesday. The snow drifts coming off of those flat fields is going to be incredible. I can guarantee you my 25 mile ride home tonight will take me a minimum of 2.5 hours.

Alan,
The phone and computer needs to be move to the garage!! Hook up a strobe light on the phone so when the router is running you won't worry about hearing it ring.

Bite me Tim, and drive up to deal with this "madness" that is going to happen tonight hahaha....

Never thought I'd actually hear the weather guys predict the worst storm in Chicago history....

Picked up enough beer and pretzels. Although still at work through the day, I don't see us being here tomorrow. That is if I can get home. Last time it snowed 6 " during the day it took me 4 hours to drive 24 miles...

Hope everyones power stays on !!!! Going to be a hell of a ride come tomorrow...

we were spared with only 6 inches yesterday, but it is getting windy and cold. I have never seen so many cars in the ditches. For some reason it is way more slippery than it looks.

If you're refering to the storm that hits us and is now headed to the northeast. All I can say is hold on to your hats! 14 degrees with a wind 35-40!

I've got to pick up extra beer and wine on my way to snowboarding tonight. This is going to be a wild one. We're getting predictions of 10-15" by the end of tomorrow, but I think the wind is going to stack the snow up tall. Already got fuel cans filled, fired up the generator last night, have two more gen-sets ready. I brought my bulldozer inside for the first time in years, to ready it for pushing snow. 11' blade is on the backhoe, and the F350 plow truck is fueled up. One of my guys is excited for the fact that he's gets to ride his snowmobile in to work tomorrow. We gave everyone the option to stay home.
This is going to be fun.

We in Indy are going to get hit with the second round of ice this afternoon continuing thru the nite, the winds are going to pick-up, and tomorrow nites low temp drops to 4 to 6. I'm ready for July. As some would say, "you have one day less of winter".

Yup, pretty nasty here in OK and headed your way (midwest and east). We have anywhere from 5-10" in the OKC area. It's 9 degrees at my house right now and the wind is blowing the snow pretty good. We have a lot of white out type conditions and tons of deep drifts. I've got a couple 2-3' drifts in my yard. I've heard of some around the city of 5-6'. I hope Chicago gets a lighter blow then they're predicting.

We're supposed to be in the single digit and teens for a couple days with no relief from the wind. The kids may be out of school for a couple days.

Hahahaha,,, yeah you guys can't handle it for a reason.. We're built to handle it but a predicted 24+ inches, ahh umm, It's going to be a riot, and not the fun kind...

Well, the kids will love it when it's done and the zub zero temps pass...

We live in the North for what reason????

Hope the power stays on, that's again all I'm worried about..

We're looking at 3-6" today and 14-20" tomorrow. The whole state is going to get it so the skiing will be great this weekend. It's been cold so our lake froze for the first time in two years. This is turning out to be a great winter! If you're going to live here you got to learn to like it.

Speaking of kids out in the snow, I got a kick out of the Tribune's front page article on Monday. It was concerning at what temp schools don't allow the kids outside for recess. They had a map of the US with various locations on it. I think it was Atlanta that reported they don't allow the kid's out when the temp hits 30 degrees. Then there was a Minnesota school as well as one in Alaska that said the temp had to be below -20!!!

The first round of snow is pretty much a let down, you could probably get stuck in a camaro if you tired, hopefully the next batch is a little more serious. Got my cans filled, plows mounted, dozer and hoe fueled and fresh gallon of high octane southern comfort. I use the generator on the motorhome for power out emergencies, 50 gallon tank that way Bring it on! they are calling for 8-15" after 5 tonight, we are in the nw corner of ohio between chicago and detroit. The plan is to follow the storm east friday morning and get some boarding in this weekend... then back to work on the boat.

We got off 15 minutes early today. Some garages were warned to show up on time tommorow no excuses.Heard this afternoon Edison guys were told to stay home unless it turns into an emergency, then they will be called. I'm ready to go in just to see whats happening.Back in the old Bell days they would team the repairmen and installers up,and the line gang would chauffeur the operators around. So we will see,we have not had anything like this in awhile.

I'm staying home tomorrow. My company technically has not called in and closed for tomorrow, but barely anyone is actually going to show up. Of the 400+ people, I'd be shocked if 50 people showed up. None of materials management is coming in. That's, purchasing, all of engineering, and planning , and its management. I imagine a few folks in customer service will show up, because if our machines go down, no new beer is made. That could send the nation into a frenzy. LOL

Mike your right, I'm ashamed that I mentioned needing to pick up beer. My worry is that my keg might be near empty, with only a case+ back up.
This is a pick from the top of the hill tonight. Snowboarding was good, until the snow started blowing UP the hill. When that started, we sought refuge in the nearby watering hole. Sorry about the quality, it was taken with my Crackberry.

Adamt, I definitely prefer the other option. Once it gets 100 degrees, you can do nothing but sit in the A/C house or car and that's it. Once down to swimwear, you can't shed anything else to get comfortable. In the north, you simply put more clothes on in winter. Granted, yes, the blizzard we are having now is a bit extreme, and we only go out to attempt to clear the driveway, and let the dogs out, or run for booze, but even then, those days are very few and far between.

Last weekend I put a couple hundred miles on the snowmobiles and had a great time in 10-20 degree temps.

5 freakin inches. Storm of the century my arss. Not here in SE Michigan. Our roads were pretty decent on my way in to work at 5:30am (decent with 4 wheel drive). The one issue is the drifting. It took my bulldozer to clear a few 2-3' drifts.
Going to have some fun after work. The question is, snowboarding or Quads? I love the winter.

I'm jealous Tull! always wanted to ride out a big storm on the hill. Wind was killer last night though, I drive like an idiot and I was down to 20 last night on the way home due to lack of visibility, turned into the wind and could not see any more. I was rather disapointed when i got up from my nap and saw we did not get anything close to what they called for. found a couple drifts to the hood on my 79 150, rides on 35" tires and a 4" lift. I do have fun playing in the snow though. took a break while im in the shop replacing a hose I blew this morning.

PS beer is for lightweights, Gallons of southern take up less space...

Remember, snow is like sex, you never know how much your going to get or how long its going to last.

Tull and Stang don't give up on the storm yet, we're 200 miles west of you and it's still snowing and blowing pretty good.

Hard to tell how much is on the ground because of the drifting.

View out the back window of the house.

Had to clear a path so the dogs could take care of business but we won't start clearing up until the wind dies later today.

Drifts are crazy, one side of the car you can open the door and climb in and the other side the snow is over the roof.

I'm glad the snow was not as wet as the weather people predicted. My little 5 hp 4 stroke simplicity blower definitely would have had issues with any wetter snow than we got.

It really is hard to determine how much we got here, but some drifts by my house are 4 feet tall. There are a lot of trees here, and it's pretty sheltered, so I imagine more open areas have te 8-10 foot drifts that the news is all over today.

I'll see more of the brunt of the storm total tomorrow when i head back south to Franklin for work.

The company I work for makes high speed bottling equipment for more than just breweries,    I don't know if Crown is bottled with Krones equipment, but I know Bacardi E&J Gallo, and many others are. 70% of the market is owned by Krones, so if it's liquid, and in a bottle, we probably have a big part in bottling it.

I did a cosmetic resto on the 78 a few years ago to use as my personal work truck. Its the smaller of the 2 I built with the 400M in it. I built a 79 stepside with a 524" cobra jet motor for the summer months. I have an unatural attachment to my old stuff.

I should have had a better attachment to some of my old toys too, but, a few got away. The '68 will not be getting away.

I was all set to go,but I thought I'd call in 1st at around 615.My manager who happens to have the duty this week say's "don't bother" we won't get anywhere anyway. Then after sunrise I manage to get out and see that I would have never even got out of my garage anyway,it was drifted over 2 ft in front of the garage and the snow at the street where they plowed was up to my waist. The wind was coming from the north right down the river and blowing all that snow right up into the yards. Look at all that excitement you miss

As mentioned when I started this thread, we shut the plant down at 2:30 on Tuesday with the intent on starting up today at 6:00. Well, I'm here but parked in the front of the building (north side) where the drifting isn't too bad. All the rear entrances as well as the parking lots are drifted shut. Several of the doors I wanted to try to get into, I can't even see!!! Our plowing contractor is here trying to punch through but I have a feeling he won't have much success with the equipment he has. It's going to take a rather large front end loader to get the mess cleared to the point where we can open back up. The problem is finding one!!! I wish I had my camera.

The last time we had this mess, I was able to find a contractor with a front end loader but he proceeded to rip open one of our gas lines (high pressure) to one of the buildings. The fire dept. had a pumper here for 12 hours ready for the worst while the gas company dug up the street to cut off the line. No shut off for the service!!! At least the break was before the meter!!

No its a 429 scj based stroker motor. the 78-9 likes the 429-460 motor swap better than the FE swap. my old 76 had a 390 out of an old t-bird swapped in that was quite a runner with the 3.89 rear end and a detroit locker in the rear and a limited slip in the front. that was fun. the motor was originally dual 4s and we swapped it to a single holley to make it a little more streetable. It was a highboy short bed, the front driveshaft was longer than the rear.

The snow drifts are just crazy. This is a "high top" table. Knee high just to get to the sidewalk.

There isn't anywhere to even plow the snow.

I had strategically parked next to a van into the wind.

Shoveled behind the car and backed right out. There was more ice in the inside of the windshield than the outside.

Thanks to these.

Hollywood, pretty crazy! I saw the pictures of the Chicago area on tdhe news last night...pretty wild! So, how does this storm rate compared to those of the past for most of y'all?

Here in OK, we broke or tied several records since Saturday.

Saturday - 76 degrees (Tied record high)
Tuesday - 12" of snow (Broke record)
Tuesday night - Forgot what the temp was but broke a record low temp

We've hit some single digits and just below zero with colder wind chills. Seems that is pretty cold for OK the way they talk. This particular storm kind of reminds me of living in South Dakota.

Eric,
You need a special permit from the EPA to dump snow into bodies of water. It's gotten very hard to get. They are concered about road salt (fresh water) oils and asphalt contamination.

Ah, I see said the blindman, but I would think it winds up there anyways.
I did see these bigtime snow melters with a diesel tanker firing them, you would dump the snow in a hopper and it would melt it and send the water down the storm sewers

I've heard of those. Seems like they are a lot worse for the enviorment than dumping it in the ocean or a river.

I know some people that own a large excavation company. Like a lot of them around here, they plow snow in the winter. One of them was telling me, they no longer call it snow plowing, but now call it "snow management".

Its more of the whole green thing gone mad. Cant dump snow in the ocean because there is road salt in the snow???? It is true there are other pollutants from the roads, however, the snow melts, it all goes down the storm drains, carrying zillions of tons of pollutants, dissolved and in suspension, and the storm drains all drain to rivers (even worse...fresh water) and the ocean anyway, and thats perfectly legal.

I backpack in the Smokey Mtns a few times a year and they are not allowed to salt the roads anywhere in the park. All of the native trout were dieing and since they stopped populations are bouncing back. Had a truck get snowed in at Newfound gap in December. Had to go back for it 2 weeks later 10 hour round trip.

Its all about what you're used to.. Thank God we do have a lot of equipment, however, storms like this really DO test it! I think we take it in stride ...just part of the game. The afternoon the maintainer was trying to get thru, you should have seen the neighbors out to watch.. almost like a party!

All the bad stuff you're talking about doesn't get quite that far. Around the lakes here you cannot use fertilizer containing phosphorus nor do they use conventional rock salt on the roads around the lakes. They do nothing or use sand. I'm sure there is an environmentally safe ice melter but it's probably not economically feasible.

You drop a snowmobile through the ice and the EPA goes after you!! I have a friend that just went through the experience. It was deep so he spent some $$$ for a dive team to go down and get it the next day. I'm going to have to find out if he got a fine.

BYW, he was lucky and was with a group of people who were able to get him out of the water.

hollywoodie, what about the drainage ditches that drain into the lakes, the ones not near the lake? would this be a case of "Scotts" making large donations to fund the EPA? they closed off a section of our lake where the PPMs of Pittsburgh turds seem to be flowing in from the leach beds a couple miles away, plus add in all the exhaust from the boats...In August the lake gets a green slime which wasnt prevalant 20 years ago, my take is the fertilizers activating the algaes...I only goes as far as hanging over the side for relief anymore....I rarely get in this water. I have a hard time letting my kids get in there, but, alot will say they get the squirties after a day at the lake

just an observation but right now the city of Chicago is taking some heat for not shutting down Lake Shore Drive sooner but I think all the municipalities did one heck of a job with this storm. Less than 24 hours after it ended one can barely tell what we went through. Everyone's going about their business like it weas just another snow storm.

I remember about 24" of snow back in Rhode Island in 1978 and we didn't see a snow plow for 5 days, I litterally remember standing in line at the corner bakery for hours waiting for a loaf of bread. The area was crippled for almost 2 weeks. All I can say is good job to everyone on this one, it was actually pretty fun. We laugh at 2' of snow now.
