Hey Guys,
I bought a Craftsman 28" snowblower with a 9 horsepower Tecumseh engine. I believe it's about four years old, or just before Tecumseh went under. The issue is about after 30 minutes of running, it stalls out. I have to let it sit before it fires back up. When it fires back up, there's lots of dark smoke coming out of the muffler. I have no idea what sort of maintenance has been done to this engine. Does anyone have any suggestions? It's getting pretty frustrating at this point, especially with all this snow. Pull the air cleaner and see if when you operate the choke the butterfly is opening and closing completely. Also, next time it begins to stall unscrew the gas cap part way and see if it picks back up, if it isn't venting it might create a vacuum and starve it after a while. But, if that was the case not sure why you'd see the black smoke on re-start .....
Carb float adusted too high, or float needle leaking by might be other items to look at. Does it stall suddenly or can you tell it will happen soon, starts to run rough and smoke first? If ------------- '63 American Skier - '98 Sport Nautique |

That's a great point about the gas cap. It slowly starts to die out, almost like it's starving for gas. Instinctively, I unscrew the cap and check the gas level, which is fine. I prime it back up and give it a couple of pulls. It runs rough for a few seconds and then is perfect the rest of the time. I'm guessing the smoke might be due to me priming the heck out of it to restart it. Maybe I'm pumping too much gas back in at once? Hey John, I can have a few feet of snow shipped down south to FL for you. It will be like your Ohio days. I've got the 8 HP and went through the same problem. It's older by at least 30 years than yours but most likely the same engine/carb as engine manufacturers get more HP out of them as they produce them. I bought a carb rebuild kit, rebuilt it and it's been fine since. One caution is to pay real close attention to the float needle seat install direction. The first time I put the seat in upside down!! 
Besides the carb issue, the only other problem I had with the blower was the cheap stamped steel sheaves the OEM used. They were not running true and due to the short shaft centerlines were chewing up the belts.
