'88 Sea Ray Seville with Ford 351 Marine. motor will crank but not run. No voltage w/ good ground to coil with key in on position. good voltage at key switch. i have a big red breaker mounted on the left rear exhaust manifold that is not tripped, but no voltage behind. when i put a 12v battery charger in line on the coil, the motor starts and runs fine. when I disconnect the charger, the engine dies.
new here, help!

start pulling battery cables and cleaning, sounds like a connection problem

sounds like your battery has a dead cell. could be your ignition if not that.

Yes, will crank but not start - no voltage to coil. However if I run a 12v hot line to the coil, it start and run fine. I think it's the purple cable behind the ignition.

Your boat equipped with an Emergency Kill Switch?

Jeff, not sure if your boat was equipped with one. The Emergency Safety Switch is a tether/lanyard that clips to the captian. It kills the motor in the event the captian gets thrown overboard. The other end is attached to the shifter/throttle via a toggle switch located on the shifter housing. You may not have the lanyard...but is there a toggle switch that one would connect to?
Is this a new boat to you?

Your shifter might look something like this. The lanyard is shown on the lower, left front. It is the coiled cord with the attached clip. If your lanyard is missing it has probably tripped the toggle. Flip the toggle switch to the upward position. This will enable the engine to start.

No kill lanyard on throttle. I have 12v continuity behind 3 prong ignition with the key in the on position between all positions except the 2 and 5 o'clock posts. I have 12v between the positive side of the coil and the upper post behind the main red circuit breaker. the breaker is not tripped(pictures enclosed). all terminals cleaned, both batteries putting out full voltage. if i put a 12v charger inline to the coil the motor starts and runs fine. help!

Jeff,Sounds like the start switch itself or the relay. Salty is having the same problem. Pete put up a schematic of the ignition thread there. Check it out if you haven't already.

Jeff, what kind of motor in that boat? Mercuiser I/O?
I worked in the boat business from '88 through 93'. Not a technician, but our guys in the shop had numerous Mercuisers with faulty "shift interupter" switches. And also "nuetral safety" switches.
Have you got power from the key switch into the purple wire to the coil? With the key in the "on" run position? Could easily be a faulty ignition switch as Morfoot suggested.
I am no expert by any means, and it has been a long time since I worked around I/O's. Just remember these issues as being pretty common.
