Subject: stand or not to stand
Date Posted: March-01-2011 at 3:44pm
Hi,
I have had two good sources say not to put the boat on stands. I am inclined not to, but would like another reason to put it on stands. When I lift up on the boat I can see the bottom moving. I have also noticed some hairline cracks , that I did not before around the chines.
Looking Thanks Mike 352-361-8068

If you pull the stringers while it is setting on a trailer, the bunks will deform the bottom of the hull. The only way that I know that you can prevent this from happening is to set it on stands.

Leave it on the trailer and add some stands at the chines for extra support.

Take a while and read some of the rebuild threads here. The 'Pumpkin Patch' thread talks about stands and support as I know many others do as well. The search feature is your friend.

Gotta agree with Pete, extra support aft.The eye ball works real well for plumb and square, but a bit of time with a tape and a plumb bob will make the job easier......not to mention Correct........

In addition to the chine blocks, we blocked the keel as well... this kept the deflection to a minimum while we were inside the boat installing the structure.

Tim, I just do not think I would have posted that picture. Possibly the most hacked together thing I have ever seen. I can only imagine what the inside looks like if thats what you concider proper support for the outside...........

And what was their reasoning for this? What if the boat did not have a trailer, then what would you do?

Billy!! What's the problem with a few cement blocks? Some of us do what we can with what's at hand. I've put plenty of boats up on blocks. We've all seen worse "hack jobs"!!

Thanks Guys,
I suspected it needed supports. I cut the first secondary from a pretty decent one and at the aft it was almost 1 1/2 inches high. All be it not perfect yet I trimmed it a little still need to fine tune, but it is much better, I would never had thought the boat to be out that much, I am so thankful I took a moment and asked for your guys help, thanks a million I owe someone a beer when ever we meet

Stands look good, but why do you have it lifted so it's not touching the bunks?

Yep you want it on the bunks and the stands at the same time. I can 1 up Tim's "hack job". Hey but it worked and I got through it.

Which is worse, a hack job or a rush job?

Either way you decide to support the boat, it's a good idea to have it all supported before yanking out the stringers.   Don't forget to support the forward keel.

yeah about the height, I pretty level side to side but a little more out front to back, made the jacks for the back first and raised the front with the trailer jack and that is where it ended up, nothing a floor jack underneath the prop guard can't handle. By the way I do want to level off the old stringers for front to back? That is what I did the gunnels seem to be rising but the stringers are level.
Thanks Mike

It doesn't really matter front to back, just as long as your hull is not twisted.

The floor or stringers are not level front to back? It seems a whole lot easier if the boat is pretty level. On the secondarys with it level I can make one mark and then take it to the table saw for final height cut. but help me if I am wrong I thought their should be some sort of plane the stringers are running on. After the first one is in I could level from side to side, but without the boat being level(front to back) I would have to level in the exact spots on each stringer.

Mike,
You can't use a level unless the boat was adjusted first leveling it off to the tops of the old stringers before removal. It's best to measure off known reference points such as the floor at the hull sides.

Since you still have the old primaries in, I would drop it down onto the trailer and re adjust your stands. Then I would level the boat front to back and side to side taking measurements off of the primary stringers.

Whether you bring the trailer up to the boat or bring the stands down doesnt really matter- but I would want as many bracing points as possible.

Level is all relative... the stringers/floor, hull and deck will not necessarily run parallel. Leveling off the stringers/floor would make the most sense, I would think.

Yeah, me too, and the boat is level at this point it least it was yesterday, that was without any beer so a may have to re adjust. I was going to do just that, I was going to set my stringer height about a 1/4 inch higher than where the old wood was that causes all the problems. maybe an 1/8. Thanks

As a new member, I would like to suggest CONSIDERING the usefulness of such comments.

I use this site as a resource of technical information as well as support and encouragement. Reading comments in a public forum like this makes me reconsider dragging my boat to a CC reunion.

There is no doubt in my mind that it would not be selected "best in show", but I sure as heck do not want spend my time and money traveling to a reunion only to be subject to such scrutiny in a public fashion.

I propose that we remember the purpose of this forum which is listed at the top of the page:

Ask questions or be helpful guidance to fellow Correct Craft owners; buy and sell original parts; or discuss anything Correct Craft related.

I am now off my soapbox.

Everyone gets crabby sometime...... and sometimes the public filter is not set "ON".............

It happens less on this site than on other Watersports sites.

We are a CCFan family.... not everyone is perfect, (the Boat Dr is one of the first to admit that) but we are a family none the less......

WOFTAM, read into the post what you want. There is a proper way to support a boat while internal stringers or other work is performed. I did not agree then nor now. Futhermore if you would have posted the pic ,I would have called you on it too.
I have made several CCFan events over the past years, and I have learned a lot from other members. Most here are family, not some screen name on a PC.We swap parts, info, phone numbers and how the kids are doing in school.
Both how to do it Correct and how to "half fast", can be seen at any event and on a lot of threads. Which catagory do you fall into?I hope you are a Do It Correct Guy, if so welcome aboard, and hope to see you at an event with your CC.........Billy
