Hey gang,
My daily driver is an 01 accord with the 2.3 4-cyl vtec motor. Today it has 199,997 miles on it. Everyone changes their honda's timing belt and water pumps every 100k. I want to be the exception but I understand it is a risk. What are your thoughts? 600 bones to replace them both. They say when you do one, you do the other. What would you guys do? I would assume fix. I'm leaning toward the replacement but I'm dragging my feet. Have both done. No question. I'm all about preventative maintenance. Aside from preventing the ruining of your engine (valve interference with the TB, rapid overheat with shot waterpump or worse- pulley failure on WP causing belt catastrophe in the engine compartment, etc.), I'd easily pay that amount to NOT be on the side of the road somewhere. Middle of the night, on vacation, with child in car, with wife or other family driving, etc. No thanks!

You changed it last at 100k? If you plan to keep the car, I would change it again. If your going to sell it in the next couple months, then let it ride.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I was pretty much always going to change it, I'm just a cheap SOB lol. Good points though, I do hear that if that timing belt goes it's a bad deal...
It was changed at 100k mark yes, so it's just due again...Parts are the cheap part. I do NOT want to do it myself after looking through the steps. I know my way around the car but I don't trust myself with something that important. haha I'm spending tax and bonus money on stuff I don't want. Oh the joys of owning stuff. 1: Front wheel bearing hub assemblies for my '97 explorer 2: Front outter tie rod ends for my '97 explorer 3: Front sway bar for the '06 explorer 4: New/new to us riding lawn mower (old hand me down is about done) 5: Timing belt/water pump on '01 accord Vehicles are the worst investment one can make. What can I do with that? the 06 has 110k and my 97 has 190k. I love those things. I'll never get rid of that 97. It pulls boats like no body's bizz!!! And hauls the huntin gear around pretty good. This pic was before I put the rear shackles on it to lift the back end to get rid of that classic gross explorer sag.

I don't know what shackles I added, heavy steel ones...does that help? lol they were an AWESOME upgrade though. I recommend doing that to all those old explorers. That sag they all have bothers me! Looks more aggressive without a boat, and when pulling something it squats to level. Makes it look much better. Mike - your about 40K overdue according to the manual. Some aftermarket TB's allow a 90K service interval, but the Honda ones are 60K. I had an accord that I sold at 260K, so as long as it's in good conditon, there is plenty of life left in it :) I agree that TB, waterpump, etc are pretty easy repairs as long as you take your time and hand crank the engine over 2x by hand before using the starter. YOu'll be able to tell if you have it wrong by hand spinning it. if nothing hits in 720 degrees of turn , start it up and admire the 500 bucks you saved :) |

Warrior brand shackles are a common upgrade on the Explorers for the reasons you said. I have a set on mine, I also ended up having a custom set of rear leafs made with an additional leaf to get rid of the sag.
And I agree that 100K is longer than I push a TB. I do think that Honda recommends them at around 95K though on those Hondas (it did use to be closer to 60K), I typically go 65-75 on mine. 3 Hondas - 220K, 280K, and 190K ------------- /diaries/details.asp?ID=4472" rel="nofollow - '89 Ski Nautique 2001 |

Check the camshaft seals while you're in there. If they're leaking, oil will ruin a new belt. ------------- Tim D |

I hate timing belts.
I also hate vehicles that have timing belts that don't last 100k, or damn close to that. I also am not a fan of interference motors. Maybe these guys are not lucky enough to have the same kind of vehicle me and you used for years to go to the drs, visiting, shopping, to run errands, work out, and just about anything else we could think of! I'd LOVE to have that problem.... I have 2 cars that get well over 20K per year, nature of the beast out here. If I worked closer to home, I might be able to save the gas money and actually GET a boat. instead of just dreaming
