Took a good jump off the swim platform this afternoon and pulled two of the lag bolts loose from the transom. This is on the starboard side bracket that the platform slides down on to. What is the recomended way to re-secure these top two lag bolts into the transom?
By the way, one of the lag bolts was loose at the end of the season last year and I used 5200 to re-set it into the transom (was not able to get a good bite with the lag bolt, thought the 5200 would help...wrong!)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you boat is probably is bad need of new wood and stringer replacement.

Actually, since his Sport is a '93, it shouldnt have any wood in it.
Jim, Im a little confused- which bolts pulled out? All of the factory platforms that Ive had on my boats (dating back to our '79) have been through bolted on top and lagged/screwed on the bottom. The (top) through bolts have washers and nuts on the inside.
What exactly came loose? A picture would really help.

Tim, the top bolts pulled out about 3/4".

Tim, your 90' Ski has the same shaped stern as mine. Do you have to pull the gas tank to get to these bolts (assuming they are thru bolted)?

Jim, those were the bolts I was picturing based on your description... which is weird, I would really think they would be bolts, not lags. When you re-tightened them last year, did you have them all the way out to confirm? Or did you just sneak some sealant in behind the heads? Im wondering if the nuts somehow backed off a little bit.
Yes, I would say that removing the gas tank is probably necessary to get to the back side of the transom... but pull the rear panels and shine a light under the tank and see if you can see or reach anything before you pull it.

Tim, pretty sure that the loose one came all the way out last year (the one that I slathered in 5200). It has course threads, not the fine threads that you would use with lock nuts and washers. I will verify tonight after work.
If they are in fact lag bolts, how do I fix the holes? Clean out and re-fill with epoxy resin? Tim Morfoot called last night and we discussed this option. Any more insight would help.

The only reason I can think of for why CC would have used lags on top instead of through bolting is if the brackets were completely below floor level. This was not the case on my '90, BFN or Ski Tique, so Im skeptical this is the case on your Sport, but who knows. If the top fasteners are in fact lags, I would be inclined to pull them out, and see if they come out above the floor or not. If they do, then I would replace them with bolts (backed with nuts and washers). If they are below the floor, then we can cross that bridge when we come to it... but filling the holes with thickened resin might be an option.

A little bit off topic, but does anyone know of a weight limit on these? I always hate when more than one person winds up standing on mine at the same time, but I don't want to be a nag for no reason.
Is it more likely that these bolts had just worked themselves loose anyway and it didn't have much to do with jumping off etc.?

Tim, it appears that the bracket is mounted below floor level. And yes, they are lag bolts.

I don't think they're below the floor my '95s are in the same location and it is through bolted.
Take the tank out and look what you have before you decide on a plan of action.
Is the boat orignal to you or did you buy it from a PO. If so they may have taken the bolts out or had the nuts come off and instead of taking the tank out to rebolt them they put the lags in instead???

Paul, I am the second owner of the boat. Not sure if they are original, but probably. Both brackets and bolts look identical. The original owner put very few hours on the boat.
When you pull your tank out are you able to get to the backside of the bracket pretty easily? Have not pulled my tank...yet. Thru bolting is my preferred choice. Was trying to avoid having to pull the tank. But will do what I have to do.

I just searched my pictures and mine are bolts on the top and lags on the bottom.
I know I removed the top bolts but can't remember if the bottom lags were accessible from the inside. I'd hate to tell you yes then have yours be different. But if I were you I'd take the tank out and see what you have then come up with a plan.

Very interesting! I wonder if the floor on the Sports is a bit taller. That might explain why all of the fasteners enter below the floor. On the Ski (as well as my Tique and BFN) the top bolts entered above the floor, the bottom screws were below.
At this point, you have 2 choices that I can think of. 1)Fill the top lag screw holes with a bunch of thickened resin, then predrill and reuse the lags, or 2) pull the tank, cut a few pockets in the floor that would allow you access to the back side of the bracket fasteners, and through bolt them (preferably both top and bottom).
Option 2 is a bit more involved, as you would have to pull the tank, cut some fiberglass, and then seal the pockets off (with more glass), but is a structurally superior solution.

Good news! Pulled the tank and looks like I can get to the back side of the bracket (after cutting away some foam). Should be able to thru bolt...yea!

That's good news.
By the way, nice boat Jim. You've got my favorite color scheme for that era.

That's the 'ole great winterizing debate. I run the antifreeze through the motor that way.
Its hard to see but on the other side of the PVC is a suction hose.

Got her all fixed up this weekend. Cut away foam to expose the holes in the transom. Cleaned up the holes, installed stainless bolts, washers, lock nuts and sealed with 5200. Everything back together.
Thanks for the help guys.
I will be sure to take it a little easier next time

Anyone have an opinion about whether to use 4200 or 5200 when re-attaching the swim platform bracket to the boat? I hope I never have to take it off again, but I don't want to make it impossible.

Either will work OK. I would use 4200 if you are buying it now - easier to remove.
If you have 5200 on hand, go ahead as it will not be impossible to remove.
Do a good job installing the bracket & there won't be a reason to remove it at all!
