Hey folks. When attempting to start my boat when it is cold, while it is trying to crank it will just stop for a half-second, then start trying again. It's like there is a short to the starter from the battery. After it is warm it fires right up. Do you think this is a starter, ignition problem, or something else?
Thanks,
Mark, Charlotte, NC

So, it will start cranking, momentarily stop cranking, then start cranking again before the engine actually kicks over?

Does fiddling with the key switch change anything?

No problems when the motor is already warm? Probably doesn't need to crank as long, right?

You have a 95 Ski Nautique?

Which engine?
-Protec?
-Fuel Injection?

Your first statement is right on. Fiddling does not change anything. No problems when warm - I guess it does not have time to lose contact. 1995 EFI. I'm thinking I should first try a new ignition switch since they are inexpensive.
Thanks,
Mark

It's worth cleaning and double checking all of your connections before buying a new switch. That's an interesting issue.

Mark,
When you put the new battery in, did you make sure the connections were clean as Brian mentioned? Was a battery post/terminal cleaner used (wire brush type)? How are your cables? Any signs of corrosion at the ends? Condition of the battery should be good but what about it's charge level?

I'll check everything this weekend if I get to the lake. Thanks.

Mark,
a slightly different take maybe, but I would suggest that you verify that the ignition timing is correct. A weak starter/electrical connection could be having a hard time overcomming an early spark.
