Good morning,
I know I could search a while and probably find the answer, but I will ask anyway. I'm looking to change the tranny oil on our 96' here soon. I have read before about checking the oil level when in the water. Unfortunatly were not that close to the lake. My question is after extracting the old oil, can I level up the boat (use a straight level on side of boat) to ensure that I put the correct amount of oil back in and recheck when we put her back in the water. Just want to make sure I do it properly. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks for the help

When I change mine, I put the same amount back in that I took out and that gets me in the ballbark until I can check it in the water.

Hi Mark,
We have a SS tube setup and a quick disconect and utilize a DC powered transfer pump that will pull the trans fluid right off the bottom of the sump in the transmission. If your set up is right you will pull right at 2 qt's of fluid out. 2 qt's is what will go back in. When we do them on the trailer we will put the boat slightly bow down as the motor is in the boat at roughly 9* for a 1.23 direct drive. In the water not that big of a deal but you might not get the full 2qt's out (95%). Remember to not over fill the transmission.

Just out of curiousity, what would the symptoms of an overfilled tranny be?
I ask because I just changed mine and the dipstick is such that it makes it hard to read the exact level . . .

GL - Welcome to the site. Please add you first name to your profile, we like to address each other on a first name basis.
I have the same problem as you, can't read the trans dipstick. The ATF is just too clear. I even tried scuffing it up, to no avail. I might try some putting tape on it when I pull it out of storage.
To answer your question of overfilling, because I thought I had it drained & since couldn't accurately read the dipstick, I had it overfilled by a quart & ran it that way a whole season. When I pumped it out by vacuum I got out over 3 quarts.
The trans still works OK, doesn't leak. I must be lucky.

If you're worried about overfilling your tranny, a sure sign is when he/she burps alot and is rude to the waitress!
