Subject: Harmonic Prop Puller

So I got a new 540 in the mail yesterday to replace the 13x15 that's on my '77 Nautique. That's right, it has a 13x15, no misprint. Anyway, the prop is a test prop with a new prop warranty from Delta because I am trying to do this part on the cheap, and to continue this theme, I got the cheap harmonic puller. Delta said to thread it on and whack it! I'm worried that smacking it with a big hammer might damage the transmission, and that it might just work better to unhook the coupler. Anyone have any experience with these?

If you unhook the coupler in hopes of preventing damage to your transmission, how do you expect the harmonic puller to work?

Ive never tried to use one of those, but have not heard good things about them. If a proper puller isnt in the budget (you can get a good 3/4 leg puller on ebay for $80) then I would find someone who has one and borrow it.

I have never heard of a harmonic working ether! If it does, I'd have to say the prop was never seated on it's taper properly.

Don't forget to lap the new prop to the shaft.

The words I have been hearing on the harmonic puller are:
"Simply Amazing"

Thank you, Dr. You never cease to confuse. Back to the subject. I figured the concussive blow to the shaft might benefit from not having a hunk of transmission on the other end. It made sense when Delta Props, an advertiser on the site, gave me the recommendation. Lapping is in the plan because I'd like to hang on to this prop. MAN. GA, if it doesn't happen quick with this half assed solution, I'll be in touch. I think a test run at Lanier is in order! We went to Alatoona last weekend, and I forgot how ameteur that lake is! Nobody obeys the 100 foot rule. Didn't feel safe at all.

Several friends with newer SN's have tossed their pullers in favor of the harmonic puller.
Works better with a Dual taper prop shaft.
Leave the coupling connected.

Al,
Friends do help friends! Maybe you should teach them the proper method of installing a prop?

Tomorrow I'm putting the 540 on. Looks like the rudder could be an issue. Just try not to hit it, or take it off? It looks awful close to get a straight shot at the puller.

Did Delta recommend a hammer size or weight?

A    40 oz. cross peen hammer creates some really nice harmonic vibration.

Whereas a 16 oz. claw hammer, well, you might be there for awhile.

If the rudder is in the way, pull it out.   It's only 2 bolts and some safety wire.   And don't forget to re-safety wire on the re-install.

Thanks for the advice. Didn't need to pull the prop, just put some cardboard in front of it and it took about 15 smacks with a claw hammer to pop right off. That prop has been on for at least 8 years, but everything looked clean. I polished the taper lightly with some fine paper, and the prop fit tight before putting the lapping compound on. Napa didn't have prussian blue, so I lapped it a couple times, and it seemed to grind the grit evenly across the taper. After filing the key so it would fit the new prop, everything went on like it should. I've got a castle nut with safety wire AND a stainless nut after that. There didn't seem to be any corrosion issues with the threads of the shaft, so I put both back on.

I know it's been said before about this prop, but man, what a difference! I can't wait to get it on the water!

Some 3 leg pullers are tight to fit between shaft and rudder...
I guess for 80 you can choose the ARE prop puller..seems its desing for that!!

Any one that has a ARE prop Puller? comments? I might consider getting one of those...

I bought the harmonic puller with my Acme 540. Bill Weeks at Acme assured me it would do no damage to my trans or shaft. It worked great for me and you really don't have to hammer hard at all.

i just cant get myself to hit on a puller with a hammer, Pete recent scenario, rebuilt a V-drive for a guy, starboard side, he sells the boat and the new owner complains of a bad vibration....they pull the trans and drop it on my lap, this is after last fall that i spent an entire day aligning the running gear. so far 2 days of un paid labor...he insisted i send the trans up to Michigan for a test up there after another complete teardown, (I initially had to sleeve the 2800.00 shaft at the end with a hardened race, trade secret, because of Bad MA).
Anyways, all done and said, the fcn knucklehead had the Port prop keyed to high...this is the sht that irratates the fck out of me.

Eric,
I hear you!! That guy should read the "proper prop installation" thread here on CCfan!!

It's real easy for Acme to say it's not going to hurt the trans - unless you miss, you're not beating on THEIR prop!! I get paranoid having to pull a bearing off it's bore via the outer race when it's up against a shoulder!!

Rich,
The prop that came off with the harmonic, was it lapped to the shaft? Did you lap the new 540 to the shaft?

Pete/Eric

Wow, sorry to offend. I should have prefaced that I'm not a boat expert of any kind or anywhere near the final word. I just related my personal experience with it. I still think that for my old boat, my budget, and limited needs it worked better than expected. Yes, it has removed properly lapped and pressed on props (thanks to Pete's excellent post). Bill Weeks said that it was a tried and true method that has worked for years. I love my Acme prop and think the company is great so his word was good enough for me personally. Since it worked better than expected I shared it here.

Rich,
You didn't offend me at all. Sorry you got that impression. Now, with Eric, It may be a different story!    PS: I doubt you did with him ether!

Harmonic suggests "vibration" or sound waves.

This reminds me of removing stuck brake drums:
Experienced guys can hit the drum just perfect with one good "thwwaackkk" with a ball peen hammer. All of the rust magically loosens itself, and the drum vibrates itself gently to the end of the studs to be removed one handed.

You've got to get that "thwwacck" just right though, or you wind up wailing away futilely, essentially just abusing the car with the hammer.

same here Rich, have you been around enough to remember 79 Nautique? the only way you could offend me is if i bought the first 6 and you showed up with a 6 of Natty lite on your buy

So everything worked out perfect with the puller. The boat has never been as smooth. With the 540 it pulls like I put slicks on it, and on the airguides, it topped out juuuuuust over 50! I didn't have GPS, so it's still not a 50 mph boat, but I also found the carb-to-intake gasket has a massive leak, so it needs some tuning. I WILL post pics of the GPS speedo at 50 when I get there. Anyway, anyone with one of these boats without a 540 has not seen the full potential of their boat. Can't say enough about how it changes the driveability of my boat.
