I'm thinking about putting together an informal gathering of CCFans in the NE Ohio area. Maybe meet up at Berlin Lake, Salt Fork or even Portage. I would like to put this out there to see what kind of interest there is and how many we could get together. Since I've never put any kind of event together I am open to all ideas, suggestions and recommendations.

First thing we need to do is nail down a weekend and location. I am thinking about the weekend before the official GL CCfan reunion which would be July 9-10. Berlin Lake has a campground that I think could accommodate our group and would not have any problem with us drinking late into the night.

http://www.campingfriend.com/PhilabaunsHiddenCoveResort/default.asp?file=Home - Philabauns at Berlin Lake

Let me know what you think. Like I said I am open to all ideas, suggestions and recommendations, so lets hear them! I will bring a grill and some chicken, burgers, dogs.

We would certainly try to get out there Randy but anything before GL is out for us. Our summers so darn filled up anything would be a stretch for us but pick a date and put it out there. That campground looks pretty sweet.

The reason I suggested the weekend before GL I was hoping to talk others into attending the GL reunion!

Looking forward to seeing you at GL Alan!

Joe,
It's right off of 224 in Deerfield. I only suggested it because I've been there a couple times and I know they allow alcohol. It's on the water and they have a ramp too. When we camp out at Berlin we usually go to the http://www.lrp.usace.army.mil/rec/lakes/berlin.htm#facilities - Mill Creek Campground which is run by the Army Corps of Engineers. It's a nice campground but they have a No alcohol policy because it's a state park. Now, I usually enjoy a few cold ones in the evening, but I keep everything wrapped up in one of my CCFan coozies I've never had an issue, but then it's just my wife and I and the kids. I worry that if there is a larger gathering it may cause more attention.

There is a decent chance you could get me down there.. although certainly not the weekend between the holiday weekend and the GL reunion.. it would be a logistical nightmare for me. Iaughtnaut is also in that neighboorhood somewhere iirc.

I think Joe makes a good point. It may be a logistical nightmare for those who are attending GL and with the holiday weekend before... I want as fans to attend as possible. I think we may be better off with a date in August. How about August 26th - 28th?

Randy, Joe's right, I'm downtown Cleveland.

I'm in. Date and place is really of no consequence for me. I was starting to get bummed because I don't think I'll be able to make Green Lake, this sounds like just what I need to get my summer back online.

I will also volunteer to help you with the organization, coordination, and setup, whatever you need. I went to college right by Berlin so I'm pretty familiar with the area. I'll keep actively following this thread, but if you want to email me or call me directly, feel free.

Damn it! I missed that.

Ok, How about the weekend of August 12-14? Any weekend In August would work for me but I don't want to have in on the same weekend as an official Reunion.

Let's hold off on the T-shirts. This is just a "get together" not a CCF sanctioned reunion

If it involves water there is a fair chance I have or will race it in some manner.

Threadjack: BTW Adam, you mentioned possibly making your way up here for a weekend this summer. The weekend of that http://www.great-race.com/ - race is always a good time. If it looks like I am going to need to be competitive then it slows down my watersports and partying on saturday a bit.. but Sunday always more than makes up for it. The race is centered around the park at the end of the lake and the party afterwards stretches from park out through the sandbar.. there are usually 2000 racers and at least that many spectators/partiers.

I absolutely want to make the trip at some point, but haven't thought about timing at all.

That weekend might be tough for me as well, both for a gathering, or a trip to NY, I got a buddy getting married on the 12th. If we do the NE Ohio thing that weekend it won't be a big deal, I can just pop over to that (I think it's in Stow or Hudson anyway), and come back to the campground later, but it would probably be too tight to try to get to your place for the canoe party.

Aug 12 - 14 seems to be bad for Adam and Joe.

let's take a vote. Which weekend works best for those interested?

July 29 - 31

Aug 5 - 7

Aug 12 - 14

Aug 19 - 21

Any of these dates work for me. I know we probably won't be able to choose a date that works for everyone, but I would like to pick the date that works best for the largest number of people.

We need to pick a date by this weekend.

I'm a little concerned about the possibility of having low water at Berlin in August. Right now they are at normal summer pool but from my experience it can drop down a lot by August. I am thinking we should consider hosting this event at another location. Maybe Salt Fork?

Salt fork is Ohio's largest state park and has a really nice campground with a lot of nice free docking. Salt Fork also has a really nice lodge (for those that don't want to camp) with two swimming pools, restaurant, bar, and game room. The park has 14 hiking trails, a golf course, and an abundance of wildlife. The lake is beautiful and has plenty of nice water which tends to stay relatively calm, even on the weekends. Located right off of interstate 77 it would be easy for out-of-towners to find.

http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/parks/saltfork/tabid/785/Default.aspx - Salt Fork State Park

http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/overnightfacilities/camping/tabid/19426/Default.aspx - Camping

http://www.saltforkstateparklodge.com/ - Lodge

The only issue is that you are technically not allowed alcohol in Ohio state parks. Now, that being said, I have never seen or heard of anyone actually getting ticketed for having an adult beverage while sitting around the campfire. You just can't go around advertising that you are drinking. As long as beverages are kept in coozies or plastic cups, and you don't act like a fool, you won't have a problem. I believe they have this law on the book just to keep the riff-raff down in the state parks.

If we decide to hold it at Salt Fork you will want to reserve a camping space ASAP. This campground fills up fast. Sites can be reserved http://www.ohio.reserveworld.com/Searchpark.aspx - Online in advance. I am looking at sites in the F55 - F61 and F15-F16 area or others in the F-loop(see map below)

Please give me some feed back, Tell me what you think, and if you have any ideas or suggestions, let's hear them!

I think salt fork is a great idea! Berlin is nice and close but you are right about the water levels and we wouldnt want someone to trash their prop on an errant stump (they are out there). Its never very deep, I dove off the boat last week in the middle of the ski zone and touched the bottom.
Much better ammenities at salt fork as well, campers dock and launch, boaters beach, lodge etc. I doubt my wife and I will be camping but we will come for a visit, you never know maybe we will. I am writing that weekend on the calendar.

Also, I have nor anyone I know ever gotten busted for alcohol. Like Randy said just dont be dumb. They have that law so they have a reason to kick you out if you are out of control. They know very well there is alot of drinking going on and if they started doing random checks on weekend nights they would be handing citations out like candy.

Joe,

No way it can be an hour and a half difference. It only takes me about 20 minutes more to get to Salt Fork than Berlin, and I live right off of 77.

Maybe, but it's a straight shot down 77 and really easy to find. If you don't know your way around the Berlin lake area you could easily spend that time lost!

When I go to Berlin from my house I usually travel south to 62 then east. I could also get there by going north to 76 then East. So for you coming from the north it probably is about an hour difference. But, trust me, Salt Fork is much nicer and worth the extra hour.

I forget. Where in NY are you Joe?

I am in auburn ny.. Berlin is basically the outside border of a 1 tank trip for me. One tank after work on a friday gets you there in time to have a beer around the campfire and setup the tent on Fri while still being in bed by 12-1. Another 90 miles means a stop for gas/food, driving while tired, and sleeping at the truck when you get there.

Tappan Lake has a 299HP limit. Which is probably fine for you and I, but that may be a problem for Joe.

I've never been to Mosquito but I have been wanting to check it out. It's on my to-do list this summer. I've heard really nice things about it. The location would be central to all of those interested so far. I may take a trip out there this weekend and take a look around and make some calls and see what I can find out.

How about http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/parks/westbrnch/tabid/795/Default.aspx - West Branch ? The water level wouldn't be a problem, and although I have not stayed there I have heard that they have a really nice newer campground. I have only had my boat out there once and it was pretty windy and choppy, but I think on a normal day we could find good water. It's location is perfect. Close Akron right off of I-76 and right down the road from Summit Racing. I know some of you other local guys are more familiar with West Branch than I am. What do you think?

West branch fills up fast plus no public docking. You have to go online to make reservations. Also the water gets crazy choppy on the weekend. If you want good water and lots of space salt fork is the way to go.

Ok, I'm going to make an executive decision here. Salt Fork it is. August 5th - 7th.

If you are considering attending I would reserve your campsite TODAY. They fill up quick in the summertime.

I think this will be the best location for us for many reasons.
- The camground is really nice, and clean.
- The campground has a lot of docking for registered campers
- The lake is beautiful and you can find calm water almost any day.
- Has two nice sandy beaches.
- Lodge available for those that don't want to camp.

Register your campsite early! like right now. Lets try to take up all the spots we can in the "F" loop or "G" loop if needed.

Or call to reserve a campsite: 866-644-6727

Ok, so where does this all leave us? There's been a lot of conversation, here's what I picked up:

Berlin - possibility of low water
Salt Fork - technically booze free in the state park, longer trip from the east
Tappan - 299hp limit? no other real details yet
Mosquito creek - no real details yet, Randy did you make it over there like you said you might?
West Branch - good location, fills up fast, no public docking, water gets choppy on the weekends

Does that sound about right?

I didn't make it out of my back yard last weekend. The weather forecast was unpredictable and I had to put the finishing touches on the swimming pool project I started last year.

I figured we had to nail down a location and I knew there is no way to accommodate everyone's wishes and desires. We could go back and forth on this until August!

I think anyone who has not been to SF will really enjoy it. It's a beautiful place. I started re-thinking Berlin right after I suggested it. Because it does get low and I don't think it's the best lake we have to offer in this area. If we are going to have folks come from out of state to attend I want to show them a nice lake and I think SF fits the bill. ...and I don't want anyone hitting one of the many sandbars, stumps, rocks or any of the other hazards I know exist at Berlin. No one has fun once they ruin a prop!

To register your campsite at http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/parks/parks/saltfork/tabid/785/Default.aspx - Salt Fork State Park

1. Follow the link below:
    http://www.ohio.reserveworld.com/Searchpark.aspx - Ohio State Parks On-line Reservations

2. Select Salt Fork State Park from the drop down list then Campsite

3. Fill in Search Criteria as shown (I think a two night stay may be required on the weekend.)

4. Click View Availability on Maps

5. Select your site by clicking on the map. Lets try to get together in the outlined area of loop F If needed, we can go into Loop G these are both closest to the beach and the boat ramp.

You may also call: 866-644-6727 to reserve your site
GET YOUR SITE RESERVED ASAP!

For those that don't want to camp, the lodge is also available, I recommend trying to find a room on the first level on the wing near the lake. The deer come up to the lodge in the evening. and will almost be on your back porch. My kids have walked right up to the doe and fed them apple slices and grapes!

http://www.saltforkstateparklodge.com/ - Salt Fork Lodge

If anyone has any questions feel free to give me a call (330-seven, zero, four - 6334)

I also picked up F16 and F17 for some friends.

We need to fill up F55 - F61 and F11 ASAP

Come on guy's, if you are even slightly considering camping pick up a spot NOW. These spots will fill up quick (hopefully with CCFans!)

Brian, Maybe you are not selecting more than one day? I think you need to have a 2 day minimum on the weekend (Fri and Sat). Multiple boats shouldn't be a problem but you may not be able to park them both at the campsite. You may want to call and ask the camp office (740-432-1508) and run it by them.

I just tried it Brian and was able to get sites available. Are you sure you are selecting Salt Fork? Also, make sure you DO NOT select anything beside "Prefered Site".

Once you bring up the map you can click on each campsite to get details then "Add To Cart" to reserve the site.

Much better ammenities at salt fork as well, campers dock and launch, boaters beach, lodge etc. I doubt my wife and I will be camping but we will come for a visit, you never know maybe we will. I am writing that weekend on the calendar.

So, are you in Justin? If you and the wife aren't into camping, you may want to look into getting a room at the lodge.

Excellent Adam.

Yes, the campsites fill up quick. I really want to fill up sites F61, F11 and F55 - F58 with CCFans. Next year we will have to start our planning earlier... If you are on the fence, I urge you to reserve a campsite NOW. These spots may very well be taken up by others before the weekend is over. I talked to the camp office and they mentioned that they are filling up quick for that weekend because their is a craft show or something like that also that weekend. If you reserve a campsite and later decide you can not attend, you will only be out your reservation fee of $8.25 if you cancel 31 days prior to your scheduled arrival date. If you cancel 4-30 days prior to your arrival date you will lose your $8.25 reservation fee + $10 cancellation fee ($18.25) (and in that case you could probably work something out with them if someone else wanted the site.)

So please, don't wait till the last minute!

http://www.ohio.reserveworld.com/Searchpark.aspx - Reserve Your Campsite Now

Also, I need to get an idea of how many will be coming so that we can plan for food. I'm planning on having a cookout one, maybe two evenings down at the beach, which should be a great place to have a cookout.

Joe, Justin, Joe/NY, Eric, - What's up? are you going to make it or not?

I think the extra hour travel may have discouraged him.

The first location I suggested at Berlin lake would have been great if we had planed earlier, but I'm afraid the water may be too low there and I don't want people not familiar with that lake to damage their boats.

This is kind of a practice run. We'll see how it goes, get feed back and get ideas for next year. I think we are in a good central location for a lot of CCFans and we have a lot of nice lakes in our area.

I'm really looking forward to meeting up with the local CCFans. Boating is more fun when you have other friends with boats! I have a lot of friends, but none with boats, it would be nice to meet up with others at our local lakes.

I am probably out. It is really hard to keep a consistent crew together for weekend watersports/recreation throughout the course of the summer if I am gone every couple weeks. If it was closer I might be able to talk a crew into traveling with me but trading three days on the home lake for one full day in ohio is a tough sell. As many here can attest I have a lot of experience with what can and can’t be fit into a weekend so I got to go with my gut there. That being said if it looks like rain, cool, or windy here that weekend and good weather down there it is likely I will ride in at the last minute.   It is certainly more important that you ohio types get some time in than the NY guy making it in.

Watrski- I seen that the horsepower was listed at 399 for Tappan Lake at another site after I posted that, wasn't sure which one was right at that point. The reason I decided on SF and not Tappan was the fact that I'm familiar with SF and have never been to Tappan. I want to take a trip out there this year and check it out.

I'm planning on showing up on Thursday afternoon.

Joe- I had the strawberry milkshake in the tranny back when I first got my boat, I flushed it out like you did and it was fine for a couple years, then it started leaking real bad and then it had to go see Eric You should be fine for the rest of the season, hopefully longer. The big question is: How did you get water in the tranny in the first place?

Randy,
What’s the availability for food, ice and items like that?
Wondering what to pack and what I could buy there.
Also I was hoping to bring both the ’85 and ‘95 with the family but it looks as though only me and one boat will be coming.
The heat got us thinking it may be too much for the little one.

There is a campground store that sells Ice, firewood, and other items. There is also a couple convenience stores on Rt22 and if you drive into Cambridge you can find grocery stores, restaurants, etc.

I'll be bringing my grill and my electric smoker. I'm planning on smoking a couple chickens for Friday dinner, and smoking a pork shoulder for Saturday. I'll also be bringing a bunch of burgers and hotdogs for lunch or whatever. I'll also bring potato salad, pasta salad and chips.

Bring the little ones, I'll have my wife and three kids and my oldest (Ashley) is 15 and happy to help look after any younger ones. Hopefully the temps will come down into the 80's. The lodge should still have rooms available too if you want A/C.

Looking forward to meeting up with all of you!

My wonderful wife Paula has been getting things ready all day so we should be in good shape. I'm bringing enough to feed at least two dozen hungry adults Friday and Saturday. We should have Plenty of food for everyone. We should have enough to feed anyone who wants to join in. If you need help with directions give me a call (330-704-6334) anyone with any questions give me a call. I probably will be too busy, as I have all week to get on CCF. Just call me, if I don't answer leave a message and I'll call you right back.

The weather is looking good. a slight chance of rain, but when it's humid like this, there is always a chance it could rain. we'll deal with it.

Can't wait too see everyone!

If anyone has been on the fence and wants to come out but can't get a campsite, I have a couple extra sites available, just give me a call and let me know.

I wish I had more time to plan this, but I'm hoping we can all get together this weekend and get some ideas together for next year.

Some things you may want to bring along:

Bug Spray
Chairs
Can Coozie's

I have meat covered for Fri-Sat and were bringing a pasta salad and baked beans but we could probably use a couple more side dishes, so if you want, bring a side dish or a bag of chips.

We should get down there around 3ish today. we will be set up at site F15.

see ya soon
