I have a 1998 sport nautique I love this boat and I have always had my dealer work on it but before I hand him a bunch of money I thought maybe someone can help me. I may over weight the boat a tad lets just say I carry twenty two john deere weights that weigh 42lbs each and have a tower with board racks and speakers and always leave the dock with a full tank and and a few people ten or less. Anyway I have a transmission chatter/shutter when the boats under a load at all rpm's once you get to the speed you want no chatter but if someone cuts hard wake or ski it's doing it and getting worse. The prop is stock and I just had it checked and it's not bent the boat has 800 or so hours the meter just goes round and round and a GT40 engine any help would be greatful. I think I should have started this post please help me Eric Lavine

hows your engine alignment? could be as simple as that. i know my 94 will make a little chatter at very low speeds or when just engaging the tranny

I had my dealer check that last year when I dropped it off for the winter and they said its fine? I would like to check it my self just to be sure but I dont know how to.

you may also be getting some damper noise, good idea to check the alignment yourself

with all that weight onboard you should consider a power prop. It will pay itself at the gas station savings.

"Yup, engine is still in front of the shaft, its aligned."
Sorry, we've just intercepted a lot of Cooters lately.

Thanks guys my buddy across the lake has a 99 196 and he has a power prop I will check the damper out when I get home today and steal his prop to try when he's not looking.

Would doubt its the shaft alignment. Sounds like alot weight in the boat with 10 or so people, 30 gallons of fuel and 1000# of JD weight for a stock prop..... That is a big load. A lower pitched prop would definatly help hauling that load.

I've got basically the same setup....97 sport, "fair amount" of ballast and usually 6-8 people with a full tank and plenty of hours on original equipment. I do however have the boat extremely propped down for power not speed, and I have never felt a single shudder or vibration on acceleration. Sounds like a damper plate issue, but I'm far from the expert!
Learn your boat and save your money for gas, leave the marina for folks less motivated. A trans is fairly easy to pull in these direct drives for inspection of the plate. But just to throw you a curve ball, I have been in an under propped Mastercraft that cavitated heavily during acceleration when weighted causing a significant shudder. Cavitation can be isolated by a loss of acceleration. Hope this helps for what it's worth.
