My 1993 Ski Nautique produces a whining noise when traveling at high speed. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this. I am wondering if it could be the strut bearing or transmission. Please give me you ideas. Thank you.

Is it a "buzzing" or a "whine"? If the later, the old joke is to get your mother-in-law out of the boat!!

r u new to the boat? has it become louder lately?
You probably have the PCM power plus 1:1.23 tranny, and they are known for being little noisy...

I have had the boat four years. Not getting any louder, just annoying. Thank you for your post.

Joe,
Well, is it a "buzz" or a "whine"?? We need some more info to try to help you out here. There was a "fix" on some of the PCM transmissions that involved adding a hydraulic hose off the top side. It basically acts as a dampner (accumulator) for the pulsations of the hydraulic oil pressure.

That "buzz" would have been fixed well before '93. If he has the 1.23 tranny, then what he's describing sounds normal. They whine.

Pete, that was a problem that plagued the earliest version of the transmission (which debuted in '89)... I dont know exactly when the fix was implemented on the production units, but I suspect it was sometime in the 90-91 timeframe.

Tim, remember me talking about how I thought our 90 didn't whine? Then we decided it did. When we sold the boat a month ago mom and dad got the receipts out...under the warranty joe(PO) had the tranny replaced twice! I had no idea!!! Anyways, here's the 90 and at about 23 seconds in you can hear the whine. Not sure if this is what you got going on but could be...

My 89 has a shocking whine at 20mph. Accelerate past that to 25+mph and it goes away.

Mine whines too but when I knock it into forward or reverse, as soon as I get up to any kind of speed it either goes away, or I don't notice it anymore.

typical to the straight cut spur gears in the output section of the 1.23

Can I just keep running it and ignore the noise?

Joe,
Yes there's nothing you can do about it unless you want to have a very expensive set of gears made for it. Spiral bevel would be my choice!
